Health Sciences North (HSN) is seeking an innovative individual for the position of Certified Prosthetist/Orthotist. While working in this role, you will have the opportunity to provide comprehensive patient care, while designing, engineering and fabricating all orthotic devices for individuals with major musculoskeletal impairments. You will also design and engineer all prosthetic devices for individuals with upper and/or lower extremity amputations.
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of a four (4) year Bachelor’s Degree in a Biological Science field (e.g. Kinesiology, Nursing, Biomechanics, Biology, or Engineering) from an accredited university. A minimum of a two (2) year specialization in a clinical program from an Orthotics Prosthetics Canada (OPC) accredited college. We are looking for someone with a minimum of Six (6) months of relevant experience.

KEY FUNCTION:
Provide comprehensive patient care. Design, engineer and supervise fabrication of all orthoses for individuals with major musculoskeletal impairments for upper and lower limb segments and spinal. Design, engineer and supervise fabrication of all prostheses for individuals with upper and/or lower extremity amputations.
REPORTING:
Under the general direction of the Clinical Manager, Outpatient Rehabilitation Programs and under the supervision of the Coordinator, Rehab Business Development.
DUTIES:
- Conduct a thorough examination of the patient and review relevant medical history.
- Evaluate the patient by observing gait, coordination, and present prosthetic or orthotic treatment as required, and other physical characteristics to supplement the history and physical examination.
- Provide information to the patient, family, and involved health care professionals regarding potential advantages and disadvantages of prosthetic/orthotic treatment to ensure understanding of the treatment plan and cooperation of the individuals involved.
- Obtain and record appropriate measurements and other data from the patient to produce the recommended treatment.
- Shape capture the patient’s body or body segments to provide an accurate anatomical likeness to be used in orthotic or prosthetic treatment.
- Provide continuing patient care to ensure proper fit and function of the orthotic or prosthetic device by periodic evaluation.
- Work collaboratively with others engaged in patient management (e.g. Physicians, Allied Health, family members, and funding agencies).
- Select appropriate materials and components based on patient criteria to ensure optimum strength, durability, and function.
- Repair and maintain existing prostheses/orthoses.
- Evaluate patient care and satisfaction on an ongoing basis and formulate solutions for improvement.
- Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
- Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
- Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
- Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
- Perform other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
- Minimum of a four (4) year Bachelor’s Degree in a Biological Science field (e.g. Kinesiology, Nursing, Biomechanics, Biology, or Engineering) from an accredited university.
- Minimum of a two (2) year specialization in a clinical program from an Orthotics Prosthetics Canada (OPC) accredited college.
- Current Certification in good standing with Orthotics Prosthetics Canada (OPC).
- Membership with the respective provincial association Ontario Association of Prosthetics and Orthotics (OAPO) is preferred.
- Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.
EXPERIENCE:
- Six (6) months of relevant experience is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Demonstrated excellent judgment and proven analytical skills.
- Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of lean methodology for process improvement.
- Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
- Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
- Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Demonstrated strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize workload
- Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
- Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Medical Terminology.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor students and support personnel.
- Demonstrated knowledge of current trends in general health care and community resources.
PERSONAL SUITABILITY:
- Successful Vulnerable Sector Check is required.
- Ability/willingness to be trained on equipment / software within Rehab Engineering Department (e.g. 3-D Scanner and Design Software).
- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development.
