Role Overview:
Under the medical direction and supervision of a physician, Respiratory Therapists plan and implement a variety of therapeutic and diagnostic procedures for patients suffering from a wide range of cardiac and pulmonary disorders. In the RT role, you will have the opportunity to provide mechanical ventilatory support to victims of motor-vehicle accident, stroke or heart attack. You will support patients undergoing abdominal, thoracic or open-heart surgery. You will assist pediatrics patients and premature infants in their quest to breathe and you perform various breathing tests to provide diagnostics information in the Pulmonary Function Laboratory. The Respiratory Therapy Department at HSN provides 24 – hour coverage.

KEY FUNCTION:
Provide clinical leadership for delivey of care and operational oversight of Respiratory Services on a day-to-day basis. Coordinate staffing, support complex clinical decision making and promote high quality patient care across all patient care areas. Provide mentorship, education and adherance in professional standards.
REPORTING:
Under the general direction of the Clinical Manager, Respiratory Therapy.
DUTIES:
- Responsible for coordinating delivery of care on a day-to-day basis.
- Support the delivery of quality patient care by ensuring compliance with organizational policies and procedures.
- Assist with the clinical guidance and ongoing development of staff by providing ongoing feedback, education and certifications for professional competencies.
- Consult with members of the health care team to assess, plan, implement and evaluate Respiratory Care.
- Ensure the availability of required supplies and equipment to support safe and effective patient care.
- Support departmental budgeting including monitoring expenses, and making recommentations for equipment purchases based on operational and clincal needs.
- Oversee the work of others in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), its regulations, and HSN policies.
- Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
- Contribute to learner development by providing academic support, mentorship, preceptorship and supervision as required.
- Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
- Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
- Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
- Perform other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
- Minimum of a three (3) year Advanced Diploma in Respiratory Therapy from an accredited college.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Respiratory Therapy or related field is preferred.
- Specialty certifications are preferred.
- Current Certificate of Registration in good standing with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario.
- Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of five (5) years’ recent and relevant experience in Respiratory Therapy.
- Related leadership experience including training and mentoring staff, students and colleagues is preferred.
- Adult teaching and supervisory experience is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Demonstrated strong clinical competence in Respiratory Therapy.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate others.
- Demonstrate excellent problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor students and support personnel.
- Demonstrated ability to adapt to new technologies and processes.
- Demonstrated knowledge of current trends in general health care and community resources.
- Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of quality improvement methodology for process improvement.
- Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
- Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
- Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Demonstrated ability to manage routine correspondence, multiple tasks/projects, diversified workload and rapidly changing priorities and challenging deadlines.
- Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
- Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
