KEY FUNCTION:
Provide articulation, voice, fluency, and language therapies to children within the Children’s Treatment Centre (CTC), childcare centres, and in community schools and homes. Manage equipment and supplies, and perform associated functions to support the delivery of quality service.
REPORTING:
Under the general direction of the Clinical Manager, Children’s Treatment Centre, and under the supervision of the Speech Language Pathologist.
DUTIES:
- Provide treatment as directed by the therapist, and provide instruction and assistance to children, youth, and their families.
- Work collaboratively with the Speech Language Pathologist and other therapists to devise an individualized treatment plan.
- Monitor, report, and document the patient/client’s progress in treatment to the Speech Language Pathologist and other interdisciplinary team members.
- Attend multidisciplinary team rounds to discuss patient/client progress, review other findings, and ensure that a holistic approach is used in patient/client care.
- Perform service support activities, including ensuring the cleanliness and tidiness of equipment, environment, supply, and storage areas, changing linen, and maintaining inventory of equipment and treatment supplies.
- Perform administrative duties, including contacting vendors, answering telephone calls and taking messages, photocopying, faxing, typing, scheduling, greeting/receiving patients, billing patients/families, and monitoring and ordering office and treatment supplies, and equipment.
- Prepare all necessary therapy materials or equipment for treatment.
- Maintain accurate monthly workload measurement statistics.
- Provide education and strategies to help with communication disorders to family/caregiver.
- Assist with the orientation and teaching of new staff and students.
- Provide guidance for the treatment plan as required.
- Evaluate patient care and satisfaction on an ongoing basis and formulate solutions for improvement.
- Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
- Contribute to learner development by providing academic support, mentorship, preceptorship and supervision as required.
- Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
- Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
- Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
- Perform other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
- Minimum of a two (2) year Diploma as a Communicative Disorders Assistant, from an accredited college.
- Bachelor’s degree in Speech and Language Sciences, Communicative Sciences and Disorders or Speech-Language Pathology or Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology is preferred.
- Current Certificate of Registration with the Communicative Disorders Assistant Association of Canada (CDAC).
- Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of two (2) years’ experience working in a Pediatrics department within a health care environment.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Demonstrated knowledge of physiological and functional speech, language, and hearing disorders.
- Demonstrated ability to instruct and guide clients through recommended treatment programs/use modalities.
- Demonstrated ability to assess client’s ability to endure treatment.
- Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of lean methodology for process improvement.
- Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
- Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software, (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
- Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Demonstrated ability to manage routine correspondence, multiple tasks/projects, diversified workload and rapidly changing priorities and challenging deadlines.
- Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
- Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
PERSONAL SUITABILITY:
- Successful Vulnerable Sector Check is required and renewal every three (3) years.
- Demonstrated ability to take direction, show initiative, and be self-directed.
- Ability to use tact and discretion in dealing with health care providers and patients.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
- Demonstrated ability to perform with minimal supervision; to prioritize duties.
- Valid driver’s license with access to reliable vehicle.
- Willingness to travel occasionally within Northern Ontario.
- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development.
- Demonstrated professionalism in dealing with confidential and sensitive issues.
- Demonstrated positive work record and excellent attendance record.
- Ability to meet the physical and sensory demands of the job.
- Ability to travel between local sites.
