KEY FUNCTION

Provide coprehensive, nutritional care and counselling to individuals with cancer and their family/caregiver(s).

 

REPORTING:    

Under the general direction of the Clinical Manager, Supportive Care Program.

 

DUTIES:

  1. Interview patients and/or family/caregiver(s) to obtain relevant information required to formulate nutrition care plans using evidence based clinical practice guidelines where established.
  2. Interpret anthropometric, biochemical and physiological data in relation to nutrition status.
  3. Determine nutrition and fluid requirements based on available data.
  4. Advocate for additional relevant tests and/or medical procedures (e.g. blood tests, swallowing assessments, insertion of feeding tubes, IV hydration) when indicated.
  5. Provide appropriate nutrition counselling, education and instruction to the patients and/or family/caregiver(s) including use of tube feeding equipment.
  6. Complete clinical documentation in accordance with the standards established by the College of Dietitians of Ontario and Health Sciences North.
  7. Monitor the patient’s nutrition outcomes and adjust care plan accordingly.
  8. Liaise with the patient’s health care team and other relevant health care agencies (e.g. Home and Community Services, family health care team) as required.
  9. Complete necessary forms required to obtain tube feeding equipment, supplies and financial assistance for supplements or special diets.
  10. Adhere to responsibilities as outlined in the North East Cancer Centre (NECC) Medical Directives.
  11. Provide a consultative role for health care professionals in North Eastern Ontario working with Oncology patients.
  12. Identifiy current and potential nutrition concerns, and develop or revise clinical nutrition policies and procedures accordingly.
  13. Develop, supervise and evaluate clinical placements for dietetic interns and students.  
  14. Develop and participate in relevant research projects as time permits.
  15. Complete daily and monthly statistical workload/activity level measurement requirements.
  16. Oversee developmental strategies and follow government body and organizational policies to ensure data is private, confidential, and protected.
  17. Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
  18. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
  19. Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
  20. Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required. 
  21. Evaluate patient care and satisfaction on an ongoing basis and formulate solutions for improvement.
  22. Perform other duties as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: 

  1. Minimum of a four (4) year Bachelor's Degree in Nutrition with an accredited Dietetic Internship Program.
  2. Registration in good standing with the College of Dietitians of Ontario.
  3. Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.

 

EXPERIENCE: 

  1. Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in a clinical nutrition setting.
  2. Experience in Nutrition Oncology is required.
  3. Experience in Paediatric Oncology is preferred.
  4. Experience in an outpatient setting is preferred.
  5. Research experience is an asset.

  8. Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
  9. Demonstrated excellent presentation skills.

  3. Demonstrated ability to mentor students and support personnel.
  4. Demonstrated knowledge of current trends in general health care and community resources.
  5. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA)/Ontario Medical Association’s (OMA) Communicable Disease Surveillance Protocols.
