Health Sciences North (HSN) is seeking an innovative individual for the position of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Anti-Racism and Accessibility Manager and who preferably has lived experience with racialization, cultural discrimination, gender or sex-based discrimination, experiences of ableism and/or as a visible minority, ethnic minority, member of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community or members of other marginalized communities. In this role, you will champion HSN’s commitment to social accountability by advancing an equitable, diverse and inclusive environment for patients, families, staff, learners, medical staff, volunteers, and community partners aligned with HSN’s values, Strategic Plan, Ontario Health and Accreditation Canada standards. You will foster open dialogue, raise awareness, and implement evidence-based and lived-experience-informed structures and processes, while cultivating a culture that actively promotes equity, dismantles discrimination, racism and removes barriers to have a culture that embraces equity, diversity, inclusion, anti-racism and accessibility across all levels of the organization. You will also support and work cooperatively with our other members of the organization addressing Indigenous Health, Francophone Health and other matters related to health equity and social accountability.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Studies and/or Humanities, Human Resources, Law, Organizational Development, Equity Studies, Social Work, Public Health or a related field, from an accredited university. 

 

We are looking for someone with a minimum of three (3) years’ experience working with diverse and marginalized populations, including program management and implementation - preferably in a health care environment. The ideal candidate will also have three (3) years’ experience working in a leadership role, with accountability in organizational culture, equity, diversity practices and systems, health equity, social accountability, change management and human rights, preferably in a health care or public sector environment. Preference will be given to candidates with clinical experience, training or recent experience with project management and proficiency with data management software.

 

Candidates that possess Master’s Degree, in a related field, from an accredited university, Canadian Certified Inclusion Professional (CCIP) certification or equivalent and membership with the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion are preferred.

KEY FUNCTION

REPORTING:      

Under the general direction of the Director, People, Development and Safety.

 

DUTIES:

  1. Align with the organization’s equity-focused social accountability strategy through relationship building and collaboration with key internal and external partners.
  2. Act as a strategic advisor to the Director contributing to corporate efforts to advance equity, diversity, inclusion, anti-racism and accessibility (EDIAA) at HSN.
  3. Define a framework for the collection, analysis and appropriate utilization of staff and patient equity data; support ongoing data collection, analysis, education and reporting of various indicators.
  4. Lead the development, implementation and evaluation of an organizational wide EDIAA strategy, operating plan and related policies, practices, training and programs.
  5. Inform and be role model of the required culture and behavioural changes that will evolve HSN’s organizational culture and ensure HSN is an inclusive environment for all.
  6. Engage internal and external partners to advance EDIAA awareness, capacity and community partnerships; collaborate with other hospitals to ensure best practice methodology is adopted.
  7. Identify and address current state systems that affect health disparities across communities and health systems, inclusive racism, unequal language access, and/or other ways health inequities are experienced.
  8. Provide leadership in strengthening evidence-based approaches to community, patient and caregiver engagement, ensuring a health equity lens and data driven modelling.
  9. Ensure planning process incorporates social determinants of health, health equity principles/priorities and are grounded in social accountability.
  10. Provide leadership, expertise and advice on needs assessment, identifying health inequities, performance measurement and accountability to inform the planning of equitable and sustainable health system improvements throughout the organization and across multiple HSN sites across the region.
  11. Lead and implement new employee development and education initiatives with a focus on EDIAA and co-designed with those with lived experience; assess the training effectiveness and continuously improve content and delivery mechanisms.
  12. Work with internal and external partners to build an inventory of resources for ongoing professional development of HSN staff, medical staff, learners, and volunteers.
  13. Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
  14. Participate in the accreditation process and work to ensure that the program and HSN achieve, maintain and continually improve upon their accredited status.
  15. Teach, coach and lead staff in the development and monitoring of quality indicators and improvement initiatives.
  16. Engage in and foster professional development of all staff and provide opportunities for learning within budgeted resources.
  17. Ensure a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors; investigate, report, debrief and take or direct corrective action as required on incidents.
  18. Collaborate with internal and external partners/organizations/community groups to achieve program objectives, integrate and link services and foster partnerships across the continuum of service delivery.
  19. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
  20. Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required. 
  21. Perform other duties as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: 

  1. Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Studies and/or Humanities, Human Resources, Law, Organizational Development, Equity Studies, Social Work, Public Health or a related field, from an accredited university. 
  2. Master’s Degree, in a related field, from an accredited university is preferred.
  3. Canadian Certified Inclusion Professional (CCIP) certification or equivalent is preferred.
  4. Membership with the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion is preferred.
  5. Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.

 

EXPERIENCE: 

  1. Minimum of three (3) years’ experience working with diverse and marginalized populations, including program management and implementation, preferably in a health care environment.
  2. Minimum of three (3) years’ experience working in a leadership role, with accountability in organizational culture, equity, diversity practices and systems, health equity, social accountability, change management and human rights, preferably in a health care or public sector environment.
  3. Clinical experience is preferred.
  4. Training or recent experience with project management is preferred.
  5. Experience working with data management software is preferred.

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: 

  1. Demonstrated knowledge of regional/provincial/national health care system and interaction of system within the clinical programs.
  2. Demonstrated knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Ontario Human Rights Code, the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, the Ontarians with Disabilities Act, Sexual Violence and Harassment Action Plan Act, the Employment Equity Act and other relevant human rights legislation.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of health equity, social accountability and the importance of diversity and inclusion principles, trends, research methods, statistical analysis and reporting.
  4. Demonstrated diagnostic, problem solving and critical thinking skills with the ability to provide solutions to complex problems and deal with ambiguity.
  5. Demonstrated ability to conduct research, continuous quality improvement, program evaluation and knowledge translation and mobilization.
  6. Demonstrated ability to build relationships, foster collaboration, lead transformative change.
  7. Demonstrated ability to coach, advise and teach others using the principles of adult learning.
  8. Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of quality improvement methodology for process improvement.
  9. Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
  10. Demonstrated knowledge of relevant legislation and principles of management, hospital committee structure, conflict management and resolution, system needs analysis and organizational assessment.
  11. Demonstrated ability to use tact and discretion in dealing with health care providers and employees.
  12. Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
  13. Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  14. Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
