Health Sciences North (HSN) is seeking an innovative individual for the position of Manager, Support Services to lead in the overall planning, organizing, and directing of Program Services (i.e. Patient Food Services, Environmental Services, Portering, and Switchboard Services) for all HSN sites. Direct and monitor the performance of the departments’ team to ensure the goals and objectives of human and financial resources are achieved as per designated accountabilities, responsibilities, and quality best practice standards.

 

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of a two (2) year Diploma in Business Administration, Food Services Management or in a related field, from an accredited college. Candidates that possess current Certificate in Infection and Prevention Control, Environmental Waste Management, and/or Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) and are eligible for membership in the Canadian Society of Nutrition Management (CSNM) and Ontario Food Service Supervisors Association are preferred.

KEY FUNCTION

Lead in the overall planning, organizing, and directing of Program Services (i.e. Patient Food Services, Environmental Services, Portering, and Switchboard Services) for all HSN sites. Direct and monitor the performance of the departments’ team to ensure the goals and objectives of human and financial resources are achieved as per designated accountabilities, responsibilities, and quality best practice standards.

 

REPORTING

Under the general direction of the Director, Support Services. 

 

DUTIES                                                                                                                                                                                              

  1. Accountable for the effective and efficient operation of all aspects of the Program’s operations at all sites in accordance with standards and policies of HSN and in compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements.
  2. Implement, monitor and achieve all approved departmental budgets and plans.
  3. Identify trending industry standards that could be applied to HSN for the betterment of patients and the organization.
  4. Ensure that Health and Safety policies, practices, standards and legislated/regulated requirements are in place and maintained at all times in all departmental operations; verify quality control and follow up for corrective action.
  5. Ensure that appropriate security levels and access authorities within the department are in place and maintained in accordance with all policies, practices and standards.
  6. Resolve issues related to patient/family complaints which have been raised in regards to service operations.
  7. Ensure appropriate supply and maintenance of all required equipment and supplies to effectively operate the department in accordance with HSN standards and in compliance with all legislative and regulatory requirements.
  8. Collaborate with Ministry of Labour, Ministry of the Environment, and Sudbury Public Health Inspectors to ensure compliance with all Regulations Acts and WHMIS while educating Supervisors and staff on safe food, equipment, product handling and storage as required.
  9. Collaborate with Human Resources to ensure alignment with Collective Agreements and provide labour relations expertise to Supervisors.
  10. Ensure all systems are functioning and maintained properly.
  11. Develop annual budgets and assume fiscal accountability of the departmental operation according to approved budget.
  12. Manage human resources which include: recruitment, selection and training.
  13. Guide, motivate, monitor and supervise staff, develop standards of performance, evaluate performance and make recommendations on disciplinary action if required; promote and optimize teamwork.
  14. Oversee the work of others in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), its regulations, and HSN policies.
  15. Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
  16. Participate in the accreditation process and work to ensure that the program and HSN achieve, maintain and continually improve upon their accredited status.
  17. Teach, coach and lead staff in the development and monitoring of quality indicators and improvement initiatives.
  18. Engage in and foster professional development of all staff and provide opportunities for learning within budgeted resources.
  19. Ensure a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors; investigate report, debrief and take or direct corrective action as required on incidents.
  20. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders/organizations/community groups to achieve program objectives, integrate and link services and foster partnerships across the continuum of service delivery.
  21. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
  22. Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required. 
  23. Perform other duties as required.  

 

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: 

  1. Minimum of a two (2) year Diploma in Business Administration, Food Services Management or in a related field, from an accredited college.
  2. Current Certificate in Infection and Prevention Control, Environmental Waste Management, and/or Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) is preferred.
  3. Eligible for membership in the Canadian Society of Nutrition Management (CSNM) and Ontario Food Service Supervisors Association is preferred.
  4. Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.

 

EXPERIENCE: 

  1. Minimum of five (5) years working in environmental service, or within the food industry preferably in a unionized health care environment in a progressive leadership role.

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: 

  1. Proven ability to develop, monitor, administer and report on departmental budgets.
  2. Demonstrated excellent judgement and proven analytical skills.
  3. Demonstrated excellent team building skills with the ability to work cooperatively with team members.
  4. Demonstrated leadership, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  5. Demonstrated ability to coach, advise and teach others using the principles of adult learning.
  6. Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of lean methodology for process improvement.
  7. Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
  8. Demonstrated knowledge of relevant legislation and principles of management, hospital committee structure, conflict management and resolution, system needs analysis and organizational assessment.
  9. Ability to use tact and discretion in dealing with health care providers and employees.
  10. Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software, (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
  11. Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  12. Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
