KEY FUNCTION

Provide laboratory services in accordance with the Standards of Practice for Medical Laboratory Technologists as established by the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) and HSN. Interact with patients and other healthcare workers to ensure the needs of patients are met in a caring and professional manner.

 

REPORTING 

Under the general direction of the Manager, Laboratory, Clinical Pathology.

 

DUTIES:

  1. Analyze Quality Control (QC) data for the purposes of quality control and verification of test results related to Chemistry, Hematology and Transfusion Medicine and implement corrective action as required.
  2. Ensure the accurate, precise and verifiable performance of tests and the timely reporting of results providing reliable and timely information for the Clinician.
  3. Ensure Institute for Quality Management in Healthcare (IQMH) and other proficiency testing specimens are completed and reported in a timely manner.
  4. Perform the full range of tests and procedures related to the assigned section and/or site.
  5. Recognize, troubleshoot and communicate equipment/reagent related malfunctions and initiate appropriate remedial action in a timely manner.
  6. Monitor inventory and inform Charge or Senior Technologist when re-orders are required.
  7. Assist in the review and updating of policies and procedures.
  8. Maintain and improve clinical competency through commitment to personal professional development.
  9. Follow safety practices and standard precautions.
  10. Protect the confidentiality of all patient information in accordance with existing legislation and hospital policies.
  11. Work collaboratively and communicate effectively to ensure safe and effective delivery of service.
  12. Assist in the orientation, training and inservicing of staff and students.
  13. Participate in studies and projects as required.
  14. Adhere to the policies and procedures of HSN and the department.
  15. Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
  16. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
  17. Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
  18. Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
  19. Perform other duties as required. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: 

  1. Minimum of a three (3) year Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited college.
  2. Current Certificate of Registration in good standing with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) is required.
  3. Training in Phlebotomy, Biochemistry, Transfusion Medicine, Hematology and  Bacteriology is required.
  4. Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.

 

EXPERIENCE: 

  1. Recent Medical Laboratory Technologist experience in Core Laboratory is preferred.

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: 

  1. Demonstrated understanding of  the principles of medical laboratory sciences basing practice on current techniques and scientific knowledge.
  2. Demonstrated technical skills and knowledge in Chemistry, Hematology and Transfusion Medicine.
  3. Demonstrated ability to verify relevant data pertaining to Chemistry, Hematology and Transfusion Medicine to ensure appropriate specimens are procured according to established protocols.
  4. Demonstrated ability to perform ABO and RH blood typing, antibody screens, phenotyping and direct anti-globulin tests.
  5. Demonstrated ability to perform compatibility analysis utilizing established methodologies and procedures.
  6. Demonstrated knowledge in the preparation and issuing of blood and blood products according to established procedures and protocol.
  7. Demonstrated ability to perform peripheral blood smears as part of the hematologic laboratory work-up.
  8. Demonstrated ability to perform manual cell counts and the proper sample handling for body fluids.
  9. Demonstrated ability to verify relevant data pertaining to Chemistry to ensure that appropriate specimens are procured according to established protocols.
  10. Demonstrated knowledge in the application of the principles of microscopy to laboratory analyses as they apply to the Clinical Chemistry department.
  11. Demonstrated ability to perform blood gas analysis and urinalysis testing.
  12. Demonstrated ability to recognize, troubleshoot and communicate equipment / reagent related malfunctions and initiate appropriate remedial action.
  13. Demonstrated ability to effectively analyze QC findings for the purposes of quality control, verification of performance, and implement corrective action as required.
  14. Demonstrated ability to perform phlebotomy according to established best practice guidelines.
  15. Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of quality improvement methodology for process improvement.
  16. Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
  17. Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
  18. Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  19. Demonstrated strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize workload.
  20. Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
  21. Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
