KEY FUNCTION:
Act as a liaison between Community Oncology Clinic Network (COCN) sites and the Shirley and Jim Fielding Northeast Cancer Centre (SJFNECC) and coordinate and implement education and training. Support the delivery of quality patient care and excellence in professional and clinical nursing practice. Provide leadership by promoting, developing and implementing evidence-based practice. Act as a role model in accordance with the College of Nurses of Ontario Professional Standards and HSNs Mission, Vision, and Values in both formal and informal learning environments.
REPORTING:
Under the general direction of the Manager, Systemic Treatment.
DUTIES:
1. Foster a positive learning environment; provide guidance and support the ongoing education of staff.
2. Develop, implement and evaluate staff development/orientation programs based on learning needs, clinical practice standards, treatment trends, technical changes, certification requirements and relevant research findings.
3. Provide/deliver educational programs/content offering mentorship through clinical expertise to new nurses and through continuing education opportunities.
4. Conduct yearly assessments of the COCN sites for evaluation purposes (i.e. quality care checklist).
5. Conduct education needs assessment for the purpose of targeted education strategies and program-based learner needs.
6. Organize educational opportunities for nursing staff based on HSN’s strategic plan and education needs identified by the Program Director, Clinical Managers, Nurse Clinicians and Unit Nurses.
7. Structure education and incorporate principles of adult education in a creative way, to promote maximum participation and learning.
8. Evaluate activities and outcomes with evaluations and audits.
9. Provide constructive feedback to assist staff in improving their performance.
10. Check and adjust quality improvement process in the education program to ensure content is current and evidenced-based.
11. Facilitate and provide assistance in the development of unit-specific programs, plans of care, standards of care, clinical pathways, etc. to assist with the delivery of quality patient care.
12. Provide leadership in the design and implementation of patient, family and staff teaching and education programs.
13. Address professional practice issues within the nursing profession.
14. Support health care students in the clinical setting.
15. Work collaboratively with other clinicians to revise clinical orientation programs based on evaluations and/or policies, procedures and protocol updates and develop new education initiatives for orientation programs as required.
16. Network and maintain linkages with external stakeholders, including clinical experts/educators in academic centres and the healthcare community regarding nursing education, practice and professional development.
17. Maintain clinical knowledge and competency, with emphasis on clinical specialty.
18. Maintain knowledge of current research relating to nursing specialty and collaborate in the research process as required.
19. Identify and introduce clinically significant research findings to members of patient care team and program.
20. Oversee the work of others in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), its regulations, and HSN policies.
21. Evaluate patient care and satisfaction on an ongoing basis and formulate solutions for improvement.
22. Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
23. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
24. Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
25. Participate on various committees and in meetings as required.
26. Perform other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
1. Minimum of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing BSc(N) from an accredited university.
2. Current Certificate of Registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
3. Master’s Degree of Science in Nursing or actively pursuing a Master’s is preferred.
4. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certificate is required.
5. Current Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certificate is required.
6. Current Oncology Nursing CON from the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) certificate or equivalent is required.
7. Current Peripheral Intravenous Initiation and Maintenance certificate is required.
8. Current central venous line care certificate is required.
9. Successful completion of the de Souza Provincial Standardized Chemotherapy and Biotherapy course, or commitment to obtain within one (1) year, and renewal every two (2) years (i.e. the de Souza Chemotherapy Maintenance course).
10. Successful completion of the de Souza Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Facilitator Course Parts 1 & 2, or commitment to obtain within one (1) year.
11. Current Canadian Venous Access Association (CVAA) certificate is preferred.
12. Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.
EXPERIENCE:
1. Minimum of five (5) years full-time equivalent clinical oncology experience within the last eight (8) years.
2. Minimum of two (2) years recent teaching experience of clinical adult education programs or equivalent, within the last five (5) years.
3. Experience within an outpatient setting within the last year is required.
4. Recent experience in the application of Best Practice Guidelines to the care of patients.

11. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the relevant acts, regulations, legislation and standards related to Occupational Health and Safety in the hospital setting.
12. Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
13. Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
14. Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software, (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
