KEY FUNCTION:
Develop policies and procedures of ongoing function of the Virtual Critical Care (VCC) unit and Critical Care Response Team (CCRT). Coordinate, implement, and evaluate program specific education and training for VCC unit /CCRT and for North East (NE) Ontario health regional partners enrolled in the VCC program. Provide leadership, serve as a role model and demonstrate clinical expertise in VCC/CCRT. Implement HSN Corporate initiatives with Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
REPORTING:
Under the general direction of the Clinical Manager, ICU/Step Down.
DUTIES:
- Foster a positive learning environment, and provide guidance and support to ensure the ongoing development of patient care, through the education of the ICU Staff including VCC and CCRT.
- Collaborate and maintain good working relationships with NE Ontario Health regional partners and Hospital Committees; maintain a database to collect and disseminate regional and ministry mandated data.
- Act as a liaison for multi-disciplinary teams and establish open lines of communication.
- Create and maintain a database to collect staff educational competencies/certifications for ICU.
- Plan and organize on-boarding training and continual educational opportunities based on needs identified by the program or the NE regional partners and local CCRT/VCC members.
- Ensure educational material is provided in a manner conducive to maximum participation and learning; evaluate educational activities and make necessary changes to content, format and work plan as required.
- Support education sessions (i.e. Lunch and Learns, Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) etc.) and mentor new staff members at the bedside for certifications.
- Contribute to developing and implementing the seven (7) day Critical Care Orientation didactic classroom sessions for newly hired staff to the Critical Care Program.
- Serve as an educational and clinical resource to VCC RNs, regional partners and CCRT staff.
- Work with Ontario Health (OH) - Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN) to maintain proficiency in the use of videoconferencing equipment at remote sites.
- Responsible for VCC and CCRT program development and maintenance including informing the service evaluation process (i.e., Massive Hemorrhage Protocol) and monitor and report on utilization of the VCC and CCRT services.
- Develop and maintain related medical directives to support the management of ward patients at risk from critical illnesses.
- Lead education of ward nurse personnel in the recognition of basic signs of deterioration and the importance of obtaining timely and appropriate assistance.
- Evaluate patient care and satisfaction on an ongoing basis and formulate solutions for improvement.
- Oversee the work of others in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), its regulations, and HSN policies.
- Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
- Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
- Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
- Participate on various committees and in meetings as required.
- Perform other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
- Minimum of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing BSc(N) from an accredited university.
- Current Certificate of Registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Master’s Degree of Science in Nursing or actively pursuing a Master’s is preferred.
- Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) is required.
- Current certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is required.
- Unit-specific certification, training and education is required.
- Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of five (5) years of recent experience in the ICU.
- Recent VCC/CCRT experience is required.
- Previous experience collaborating with other organizations within the NE region is preferred.
- Previous experience in adult education/program development is preferred.
- Previous research or evaluation experience is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Demonstrated ability to think critically, problem-solve and make effective decision in difficult / acute situations
- Demonstrated skills as an adult educator.
- Demonstrated excellent organizational and presentation skills.
- Demonstrated proficiency in the use of telemedicine equipment (i.e. video-conferencing).
- Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software, (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
- Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
- Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
PERSONAL SUITABILITY:

- Valid driver’s license with access to reliable vehicle.
- Willingness to travel occasionally within Northern Ontario.
- Ability to travel between local sites.
- Flexible hours may be required for specific education activities.
