KEY FUNCTION

Provide direct and indirect support to staff, patients and physicians within the Emergency Department and inpatient units across Health Sciences North for the management of behavioural risk interventions. Complete risk assessments, crisis counselling and ensure connections to services for individuals presenting with behavioural concerns. Work in collaboration with hospital staff, physicians, community partners and others as required.

 

REPORTING

Under the general direction of the Coordinator, Urgent Response and Care Transitions.

 

DUTIES:

  1. Respond to individuals likely to demonstrate or have identified high risk behaviours requiring support.
  2. Support the completion of behaviour risk assessments for high risk individuals.
  3. Provide Behavioural Intervention services utilizing various techniques of care (i.e. motivational interviewing, brief solution focused therapy, recovery model, stages of change, harm reduction, trauma informed care).
  4. Provide preventative interventions with individuals and other members of the health care team.
  5. Recommend comfort support plans based on clinical assessment of risk to service recipients and inpatient team.
  6. Foster and promote positive change and independence in those individuals served.
  7. Provide support and education to caregivers and/or the service recipients’ personal support network.
  8. Provide encouragement, emotional support and motivation to service recipients.
  9. Respond in a professional and therapeutic manner to various incidents and emergencies.
  10. Participate in active response to code white situations and debriefing of staff and individual post events.
  11. Survey workforce to understand concerns, frequency of incidents, perceptions of security, and suggested actions to improve workplace violence situations.
  12. Support the development and review new or existing policies, procedures and practices related to high risk  behaviours, monitoring (i. e. zero tolerance policy) and expectations for reporting (i. e. safety, incident reports).
  13. Develop and teach education/training curriculum for all HSN employees related to the management of behavioural escalations.
  14. Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
  15. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
  16. Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
  17. Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required. 
  18. Perform other duties as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: 

  1. Current Certificate of Registration in good standing with the applicable regulatory college (e.g. College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario (COTO), Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW) in conjunction with a Master of Social Work degree (MSW), College of Psychologists of Ontario (CPO) at the Psychological Associate level, or College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO).
  2. Current certificate in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention is required.
  3. Completion of Critical Incident Stress Debriefing training, Applied Suicide Intervention Skills training, Trauma Informed Care training, Violence Threat Risk Assessment Training, and Brief Solution Focused Therapy training is preferred.
  4. Unit-specific certification, training, and education may be required.
  5. Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.

 

EXPERIENCE: 

  1. Minimum of five (5) years full-time equivalent experience working on an adult inpatient psychiatric unit or Crisis Intervention Program.
  2. Minimum of two (2) years full-time equivalent experience (within the last five (5) years) in community mental health or addictions setting.

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: 

  1. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Criminal Justice system.
  2. Demonstrated knowledge of Medical Terminology, Mental Health Act, Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), the Ontario Human Rights Code, Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA), and other relevant legislation.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of trauma-informed care and practical comprehension of intersectional oppression.
  4. Demonstrated knowledge and ability to navigate Ontario’s mental health and addictions, developmental services and community support service sectors.
  5. Demonstrated strong relationship-building skills to develop and reinforce clients’ social supports, connections to resources and events that foster social relationships, reduce loneliness, and leverage motivation to live fully.
  6. Demonstrated excellent judgment and proven analytical skills
  7. Demonstrated ability to mentor students and support personnel.
  8. Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of quality improvement methodology for process improvement.
  9. Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
  10. Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
  11. Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  12. Demonstrated effective time management and organizational skills with the ability to organize and prioritize as required.
  13. Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
  14. Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
