KEY FUNCTION:
Provide direct and indirect care to patients, supporting the functions of all team members. These functions enhance and expand the teams’ ability to provide safe, efficient, effective, comprehensive quality care.
REPORTING:
Under the general direction of the Manager, Outpatient Clinics.
DUTIES:
1. Assist nurses, hospital staff, and physicians with patients’ basic care.
2. Ensure appropriate scheduling and admission of each client according to policies.
3. Provide initial and ongoing assessment of patient and family needs in accordance with scope of practice.
4. Coordinate administrative issues and involve the nurse as required.
5. Interact with patients and families providing information and support.
6. Collaborate with other health care providers in delivering and reporting daily patient care needs according to scope of practice.
7. Assist in the administration and record keeping of medication as delegated by regulated staff.
8. Protect and promote the welfare, dignity, and individual rights of patients at all times.
9. Assist with the set-up, operation and maintenance of equipment as required.
10. Assist with collection of patient data (i.e. height, weight, vitals and measurement of intake and output).
11. Transfer, provide and/or collect linen, infectious waste, patient files, x-rays, specimens and equipment as required.
12. Prepare exam rooms and ensure dirty linen is disposed of as per HSN policies.
13. Report any changes in patient condition immediately to the nurse.
14. Operate mechanical lifts and utilize assistive devices as directed.
15. Maintain inventory of supplies as required.
16. Maintain a clean, safe environment for patients utilizing infection control principles and identify, assess and communicate safety concerns to supervisor/manager or delegate.
17. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
18. Participate in hospital training as required.
19. Assist with improvement initiatives as required.
20. Perform other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
1. Minimum of a Personal Support Worker Certificate from an accredited college or equivalent.
2. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certificate required.
3. Current certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) and Gentle Persuasion Approaches to Dementia Care (GPA) is preferred.
4. Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.
EXPERIENCE:
1. Six (6) months’ experience working as a Personal Support Worker in a health care setting is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
1. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and efficiently as a team member in a fast paced environment.
2. Demonstrated working knowledge of equipment used in the delivery of patient care.
3. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA)/Ontario Medical Association (OMA) Communicable Disease Surveillance Protocols.
4. Demonstrated ability to effectively interact and communicate with patients, families, and health care workers.
5. Demonstrated computer skills with intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office software (Word and Outlook) and applicable patient information systems.
6. Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills.
7. Ability to prioritize tasks.
8. Demonstrated compliance with HSN’s privacy policy.
9. Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
