KEY FUNCTION:
Perform essential Pharmacy medication distribution and control functions according to the standards and guidelines articulated by governing bodies and applicable Acts and Regulations for the service of the Hospital Pharmacy.
REPORTING:
Under the general direction of the Manager, Pharmacy Operations.
DUTIES:
1. Prepare, validate and dispense medication for inpatients.
2. Prepare and validate sterile and non-sterile compounds.
3. Utilize and ensure functionality of packaging automation (eg, Swisslog Pillpicker, ARxium Fastpak, etc.) to package medications into unit doses.
4. Operate and maintain automation systems (eg, Swisslog Pillpicker, Pyxis ADUs, CII safe, etc.) for drug distribution.
5. Order, receive and return medications to and from pharmaceutical suppliers.
6. Maintain department work areas by ensuring tidiness.
7. Prepare, validate and dispense medication for outpatients and off-site locations.
8. Coordinate coverage with third party companies for outpatient medication.
9. Deliver or send medication to appropriate inpatient areas and off-site locations.
10. Complete a Best Possible Medication History for inpatient areas throughout the hospital.
11. Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
12. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
13. Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
14. Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
15. Perform other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
1. Minimum of a graduate from an accredited Pharmacy Technician Program.
2. Registration with the Ontario College of Pharmacists (RPhT) is required.
3. Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.
EXPERIENCE:
1. Minimum of two (2) years’ recent experience working as a Phamacy Technician or Pharmacy Assistant.
2. Experience in both traditional and unit dose medication distribution systems is preferred.
3. Experience in IV admixture preparation is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
1. Demonstrated knowledge of extemporaneous compounding.
2. Demonstrated knowledge of metric conversion and pharmaceutical calculations.
3. Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of quality improvement methodology for process improvement.
4. Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
5. Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
6. Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
7. Demonstrated strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize workload.
8. Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
9. Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
