KEY FUNCTION

Provide psychological assessment, diagnosis, treatment, consultation, and education to clients and families with Acquired Brain Injuries (ABI). Act as the Clinical Leader of the Outpatient Brain Injury Rehabilitation Service (OBIRS).

 

REPORTING    

Under the general direction of the Clinical Manager, Chronic Disease Self-Management, OBIRS and Integrated Chronic Pain.

 

DUTIES:

 

Psychological Associate:

  1. Perform intake assessments and attend client case conferences in both inpatient and outpatient ABI services and other hospital and community-based services as required.
  2. Perform clinical screening evaluations and formal psychological diagnostic assessments within the scope of both Clinical and Rehabilitation Psychology.
  3. Provide individual and group therapies to clients and families, including the acquisition of coping skills, psycho-education, cognitive rehabilitation, adjustment to disability, treatment of behaviour and personality challenges, and treatment of adjustment, mood, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorders.
  4. Participate in regional assessments within the regional catchment area by utilizing Telemedicine.
  5. Maintain up-to-date charting/records in compliance with HSN and departmental policies and procedures and the CPO’s standards of practice.
  6. Act as the primary point-of-contact for clients, families, and other service providers as they navigate the referral and intake process.
  7. Provide day-to-day supervision and guidance to the interdisciplinary team with clinical challenges.
  8. Provide support to the interdisciplinary team in the areas of behaviour and risk management.
  9. Develop, implement, and monitor clinical and rehabilitation intervention plans within an interdisciplinary team setting.
  10. Facilitate the team review and acquisition of best practices in the ABI field, including organizing, chairing, and presenting on training days and annual planning days.
  11. Provide both informal and formal teaching, supervision, and mentorship to students, psychology interns, and other staff as required.
  12. Assist in the selection, implementation, and monitoring of program evaluation measures and quality indicators.
  13. Participate on various hospital, community, and professional committees, including the Psychology Professional Practice Council and OBIRS patient care team as required.

 

Clinical Leader:

  1. Respond to requests from referral sources and screen referrals for appropriateness.
  2. Maintain and monitor the program’s waiting list and assign workload to the interdisciplinary team.
  3. Establish a balance between HSN priorities and team values, while adhering to leadership values and initiatives.
  4. Inform the Clinical Manager of client service problems and staff concerns, issues, and achievements.
  5. Maintain referral patterns, nature of injury, region of referral, and team caseload-related data, and provide program documentation as required.
  6. Assist the team with the implementation of new initiatives, advancement of core competencies, collaborative practices, and team learning.
  7. Participate in the interview process and provide input to hiring decisions.
  8. Assist with the vacation arrangements and sick coverage.
  9. Organize and Chair the OBIRS patient care team meetings.
  10. Represent the program on the Continuum of Care Committee, North Eastern Ontario (NEO) Brain Injury Network Committee, Steering Committee, and other committees as required.
  11. Evaluate patient care and satisfaction on an ongoing basis and formulate solutions for improvement.
  12. Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
  13. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
  14. Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
  15. Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required. 
  16. Perform other duties as required. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: 

  1. Minimum of a Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology from an accredited university.
  2. Successful completion of the Post-Master’s five (5) year process of supervision, internship, and examination to acquire registration as a Psychological Associate in autonomous practice with the CPO.
  3. Current Certificate of Registration in good standing with the CPO and the ability to practice in Clinical, Counselling, and Rehabilitation Psychology with adults and families, and perform the Controlled Act of Communicating a Diagnosis.
  4. Current certificate in Non-violent Crisis Intervention course is required.
  5. Additional training in the area of Rehabilitation or Health psychology is preferred.
  6. Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.

 

EXPERIENCE: 

  1. Minimum of two (2) years’ experience working in program development, implementation, and evaluation.

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: 

  1. Demonstrated knowledge of all relevant acts (e.g. Canadian Code of Ethics for Psychologists of Ontario, Psychology Act, and Health Care Consent Act).
  2. Demonstrated knowledge and competency in the area of Clinical Psychology.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge and skills in Clinical, Counselling, and Rehabilitation Psychology.
  4. Demonstrated knowledge and skills in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Concurrent Disorders, Behaviour Activation, Psychological Assessment, Diagnosis, and other individual, family, and group interventions.
  5. Demonstrated knowledge of ethical issues related to Clinical Psychology and the health care setting.
  6. Demonstrated leadership, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  7. Demonstrated ability to liaise with other health care professionals, programs, and external agencies.
  8. Demonstrated knowledge of Indigenous and Francophone culture.
  9. Demonstrated knowledge and use of the Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN; OTN-PCVC) and  willingness to use in clinical practice.
  10. Demonstrated ability to mentor students and support personnel.
  11. Demonstrated excellent presentation skills.
  12. Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of lean methodology for process improvement.
  13. Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
  14. Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
  15. Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  16. Demonstrated ability to manage routine correspondence, multiple tasks/projects, diversified workload and rapidly changing priorities and challenging deadlines.
  17. Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
  18. Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
