KEY FUNCTION

Provide standardized and functional assessment, evaluation and treatment in managing cognitive difficulties resulting from Acquired Brain Injury (ABI), stroke or other conditions within the Inpatient Intensive Rehabilitation Unit (IRU) and the Outpatient Neurological Services.

 

REPORTING

Under the general direction of the Clinical Manager, Intensive Rehabilitation Unit.

 

DUTIES

  1. Perform psychological assessments and/or clinical evaluations as required to diagnose or treat a multitude of deficits related to ABI, stroke and other conditions.
  2. Develop and implement intervention plans within a team approach to minimize or eliminate identified injury-related deficits, impacts, and problems.
  3. Conduct crisis intervention with patients/families trying to cope with diagnosis, deficits, and behavioural consequences of injury.
  4. Locate, arrange, and advocate for resources to minimize or eliminate identified risks and problems; maximize patient/family abilities and functioning.
  5. Document and chart psychological assessments, intervention plans, progress notes, and outcomes in compliance with HSN policies and procedures.
  6. Work collaboratively with all team members to determine, implement and evaluate treatment plans.
  7. Provide education on clinical discoveries that impact cognitive or behavioural changes and coping strategies.
  8. Consult with the Outpatient Neurological Services as required.
  9. Prepare and submit statistical reports as required.
  10. Attend multidisciplinary meetings, Council meetings, and case conferences; carry-out duties as required.
  11. Provide supervision, training, and orientation for new psychology staff and students.
  12. Encourage professional development of staff and self through self-learning packages, conferences, and seminars.
  13. Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
  14. Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
  15. Evaluate patient care and satisfaction on an ongoing basis and formulate solutions for improvement.
  16. Contribute to learner development by providing academic support, mentorship, preceptorship and supervision as required.
  17. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
  18. Perform other duties as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: 

  1. Minimum of a Ph.D. in Clinical or Rehabilitation Psychology, from an accredited university.
  2. Current Certificate of Registration as a Registered Psychologist in good standing with the College of Psychologists of Ontario (CPO) is required.
  3. Successful completion of the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA)/American Psychological Association’s (APA) accredited programs is preferred.
  4. Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.

 

EXPERIENCE: 

  1. Minimum of two (2) years’ relevant clinical experience working within a health care environment, preferably in Rehabilitation.
  2. Experience in motivational interviewing is preferred.

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: 

  1. Demonstrated knowledge in the areas of Rehabilitative Psychology.
  2. Demonstrated skills in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Psychological Assessment, and individual and group interventions.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of ethical issues related to Clinical Psychology.
  4. Demonstrated leadership, problem-solving, and organizational skills
  5. Demonstrated ability to liaise with other health care professionals, programs, and external agencies.
  6. Demonstrated ability to mentor students and support personnel.
  7. Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of quality improvement methodology for process improvement.
  8. Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
  9. Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software, (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
  10. Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  11. Demonstrated ability to manage routine correspondence, multiple tasks/projects, diversified workload and rapidly changing priorities and challenging deadlines.
  12. Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
  13. Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
