KEY FUNCTION

Assist in establishing and maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment for the patients through engagement and interaction.

 

REPORTING

Under the general direction of the Clinical Manager, Surgical Inpatient Unit.

 

DUTIES:

  1. Assist the clinical team in the development and maintenance of a therapeutic environment.
  2. Assist with patient referrals in accordance of unit practices under the direction of a therapist or nurse.
  3. Work collaboratively with the clinical team to best meet the unit and patient’s needs.
  4. Implement and guide patients through their recommended treatments and activity programming (e.g. receive and prepare patients for treatment, activities of daily living, walking program, transfers, and communication skills etc.).
  5. Document all patient interventions in the health record as per unit requirements.
  6. Instruct patients on proper use of equipment and adaptive devices as directed by therapist or nurse.
  7. Maintain inventory of equipement, devices and materials; ensure cleanliness and tidiness of equipment and environement.
  8. Maintain a safe environment by caring for equipment breakdowns, removing hazards, completing maintenance requisitions and notify therapist/nurse.
  9. Report observations of patients behaviours, progress or concerns to therapist or nurse.
  10. Evaluate patient care and satisfaction on an ongoing basis and formulate solutions for improvement.
  11. Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
  12. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
  13. Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
  14. Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required. 
  15. Perform other duties as required. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: 

  1. Minimum of a two (2) year Diploma in a health care field, from an accredited college.
  2. Current Certificate as an Occupational Therapist (OTA), Physiotherapist Assistant (PTA), or a Rehabilitation Assistant is required.
  3. Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.

 

EXPERIENCE: 

  1. Minimum of two (2) years’ experience working in a health care environment.
  2. Experience working in a surgical department is preferred.

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: 

  1. Demonstrated knowledge of surgical patients.
  2. Demonstrated training and knowledge of adult and geriatric syndromes.
  3. Demonstrated knowedge of recovery and patient-centered approaches.
  4. Demonstrated ability to assist in the development and maintenance of a therapeutic environment.
  5. Demonstratied ability to instruct and guide patients through recommended treatment and activity programs.
  6. Demonstrated knowledge of current trends in general health care and community resources.
  7. Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of lean methodology for process improvement.
  8. Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
  9. Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
  10. Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  11. Demonstrated effective time management and organizational skills with the ability to organize and prioritize as required.
  12. Demonstrated ability to manage routine correspondence, multiple tasks/projects, diversified workload and rapidly changing priorities and challenging deadlines.
  13. Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
  14. Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
