KEY FUNCTION:

Provide direct interventions and assist Physiotherapists (PT), Occupational Therapists (OT), and Speech Language Pathologists (SLP) in the provision of effective therapy services and in the daily and on-going operation and maintenance of therapy service areas.

 

REPORTING

Under the general direction of the Clinical Manager, Children's Treatment Centre and under the supervision of the Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Speech Language Pathologists.


DUTIES

  1. Assist the PT, OT, and SLP in individual and/or group treatment programs.
  2. Provide treatment as directed by the therapist, and provide instruction and assistance to children, youth, and their families and to school personnel (i.e. Teachers, Education Assistants).
  3. Document client intervention in the health record as per CTC and discipline requirements.
  4. Prepare equipment for specific and general client use (i.e. mobility aides, wheelchairs, exercise sheets, activity of daily living devices) and maintain a working knowledge of the use and availability of such equipment.
  5. Maintain a safe environment by caring for equipment and facilities and by taking remedial action as required (i.e. identify potential hazards and equipment breakdowns, remove hazards, complete maintenance requisition and notify therapists).
  6. Follow service specific and Occupational Health and Safety practices, including monthly workplace inspections.
  7. Perform various service support activities (i.e. ensure cleanliness and tidiness of equipment, environment, supply and storage areas, change linen as needed and maintain inventory of equipment and treatment supplies).
  8. Maintain daily workload measurement statistics.
  9. Assist with the orientation and teaching of new OT, PT and SLP staff and students.
  10. Perform administrative duties (i.e. contacting vendors, answering telephone and taking messages, photocopying, faxing, typing, scheduling, greeting/receiving patients, billing patients/families, monitoring and ordering office supplies, treatment supplies, equipment, etc.).
  11. Determine and align improvement projects with HSN True North; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
  12. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
  13. Contribute to learner development by providing academic support, mentorship, preceptorship and supervision as required.
  14. Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
  15. Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required. 
  16. Perform other duties as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: 

  1. Minimum of a two (2) year Diploma in a related field from an accredited college.
  2. Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.     

         

EXPERIENCE: 

  1. Minimum of two (2) years’ experience working in a Pediatric environment.

 

 KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  1. Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  2. Demonstrated good judgment and problem solving skills.
  3. Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of quality improvement methodology for process improvement.
  4. Demonstrated working knowledge of available mobility equipment and its use.
  5. Demonstrated ability to instruct and guide clients through recommended treatment programs/use modalities.
  6. Demonstrated effective time management and organizational skills with the ability to organize and prioritize as required.
  7. Demonstrated ability to safely handle and maintain equipment.
  8. Demonstrated ability to assess client’s ability to endure treatment.
  9. Demonstrated knowledge and familiarity of client monitoring alarms.
  10. Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
  11. Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
  12. Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
  13. Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.

 

 PERSONAL SUITABILITY: 

  1. Successful Vulnerable Sector Check is required and renewal every three (3) years. 
  2. Demonstrated ability to take direction, show initiative, and be self-directed as required.
  3. Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development.

  9. Demonstrated ability to perform with minimal supervision.
  10. Valid driver’s license with access to reliable vehicle.
  11. Ability to travel between local sites.
