KEY FUNCTION:
Promote and strengthen HSN’s Health and Safety Management Systems by contributing to the development of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) initiatives and support the Internal Responsibility System. Foster a safe and healthy work environment for HSN staff and affiliates by providing expert advice, training, and guidance, while implementing programs that adhere to legislative, regulatory, and internal OHS standards.
REPORTING:
Under the general direction of the Manager, Occupational Health and Safety.
DUTIES:
- Assist in the development, implementation and maintenance of OHS policies, procedures and programs.
- Provide consultative services and recommendations regarding OHS issues to employees at all levels of HSN.
- Support the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) by preparing reports, schedules, and other health and safety related documentation.
- Participate and assist in incident investigations and critical event analysis to identify root causes and recommend corrective and preventative measures.
- Participate in Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD) field visits, prepare necessary reports, communication and assist with any required investigation follow-up.
- Promote and implement preventative measures across the organization; prepare reports and analyze organizational statistics.
- Conduct and participate in safety audits and hazard/risk assessments.
- Deliver health and safety orientation to staff and management as required.
- Provide support to HSN management in fulfilling their OHS responsibilities.
- Stay current on and participate in education/training related to federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards, and guidelines.
- Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
- Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
- Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
- Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
- Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
- Perform other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
- Minimum of a two (2) year Diploma or Certificate preferably in the field of OHS or equivalent from an accredited college.
- Professional designation in Occupational Health and Safety (i.e. Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Canadian Registered Safety Technician, (CRST) or actively pursuing certification is preferred.
- Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of one (1) year experience in occupational health and safety field, including incident investigations, root cause analysis, support for JHSC, training delivery and use of process improvement methodologies.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Demonstrated strong knowledge of OHS related acts, regulations and standards in a hospital setting.
- Demonstrated excellent judgment and proven analytical skills.
- Demonstrated effective facilitation skills.
- Demonstrated critical thinking skills to promptly address and resolve health and safety issues.
- Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of quality improvement methodology for process improvement.
- Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
- Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
- Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Demonstrated effective time management and organizational skills with the ability to organize and prioritize as required.
- Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
- Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.

- Ability to use tact and discretion in dealing with health care providers and patients.
