KEY FUNCTION:
Work collaboratively with the simulation team, faculty members, and administration to design, deliver, and evaluate high-quality curriculum; support simulation-based research and maintain Simulation Laboratory accreditation status. Facilitate interprofessional student learning, action an environment of psychological safety, and lead faculty development in simulation.
REPORTING:
Under the general direction of the Manager, Simulation Laboratory.
DUTIES:
- Identify and maintain a list of priority initiatives/programs at HSN and Northern Ontario School of Medicine University (NOSM-U) in collaboration with HSN Clinicians, Educators, Regional Coordinators, and administration; ensure alignment with NOSM-U faculty priorities.
- Act as an expert resource in matters relating to simulation; provide guidance regarding educational design, delivery, evaluation, debriefing, and research.
- Lead and participate in program-level needs assessments; design comprehensive course curricula, educational materials, and evaluation tools to ensure alignment between simulation modalities and learning outcomes.
- Collaborate actively with the Simulation Laboratory team; work to ensure clinical learning objectives are supported and achieved.
- Develop and support an environment of psychological safety for all participants; utilize formal pre-briefing techniques and encourage a climate for reflective learning.
- Support the Simulation Laboratory in maintaining accreditation status; ensure ongoing compliance with the requirements of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
- Support the Simulation Laboratory in the delivery of departmental and organizational in-situ training.
- Encourage and support the delivery of robust Interprofessional Education (IPE) experiences.
- Perform periodic reviews of programs and execute the writing of formal summary reports.
- Provide structured orientation to new instructors on the core principles of simulation training and evidence-based debriefing techniques.
- Work in a self-directed manner and track workflow metrics; ensure support equity is maintained across collaborating institutions and programs.
- Maintain a working knowledge of emerging simulation modalities, educational trends, and research developments.
- Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
- Contribute to learner development by providing academic support, mentorship, preceptorship and supervision as required.
- Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
- Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
- Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
- Perform other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
- Minimum of a four (4) year Bachelor’s Degree in Sciences, Health Sciences, or Nursing from an accredited university.
- Master’s Degree in Education, Health Professions Education, or a relevant advanced discipline from an accredited university is preferred.
- Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of three (3) years’ experience working in a clinically-related department within a health care environment.
- Experience teaching adult learners, facilitating interprofessional education (IPE), or designing healthcare curricula is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Demonstrated knowledge of adult learning principles, simulation pedagogy, and evidence-based debriefing frameworks; includes the ability to design and establish a psychologically safe learning environment.
- Demonstrated knowledge of interprofessional education (IPE) and multiple simulation modalities (i.e. high-fidelity human patient simulators, task trainers, virtual/hybrid simulation, and standardized patient programs).
- Demonstrated excellent presentation, facilitation, and instructional skills tailored to diverse clinical audiences.
- Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of quality improvement methodology for process improvement.
- Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
- Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
- Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Demonstrated ability to manage routine correspondence, multiple tasks/projects, diversified workload and rapidly changing priorities and challenging deadlines.
- Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
- Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
