KEY FUNCTION:   
Operate and maintain equipment used to generate power, heat, steam, air conditioning, and refrigeration throughout HSN and associated sites. Respond to operational issues that arise while effectively making decisions for the safe and smooth operation of hospital equipment and infrastructure.  

 

REPORTING:    
Under the general direction of the Supervisor, Facilities Management designated as Chief Operating Engineer. 

 

DUTIES:  
1. Inspect, adjust, clean, lubricate and repair boilers and auxiliary equipment associated with the central plant systems, supply and exhaust fans, refrigeration equipment, pumps and compressors.  
2. Repair patient care equipment and auxiliary related systems as required. 

3. Monitor and inspect hospital related equipment (i.e. switches, valves, gauges, alarms, meters) to ensure equipment is operating safely and efficiently. 
4. Test and maintain water treatment systems and take necessary corrective action to maintain required levels. 
5. Analyze and troubleshoot hospital systems and take appropriate action so ensure continuous and reliable operation of equipment and systems. 

6. Develop operational, safety and maintenance procedures.  
7. Use hand and/or power tools to maintain hospital equipment or systems. 
8. Take air readings and adjust ventilation systems to ensure compliance with Canadian Standards Association (CSA) standards. 

9. Overhaul pumps, compressors and associated systems. 
10. Complete corrective, preventive maintenance work order requests and maintain all required documents related to work. 
11. Maintain appropriate instruction manuals, standard operating procedures and policy binders. 

12. Maintain detailed daily logs of operation, maintenance, and safety activities including test results, instrumentation readings and details of equipment malfunctions and maintenance work. 
13. Ensure safe operation of equipment. 
14. Keep equipment clean, lubricated and serviced regularly to ensure optimal efficiency. 

15. Perform/coordinate major equipment repairs and perform system bypass as required. 
16. Provide assistance to other trades or contractors in repairing or replacing infrastructure related systems and completing daily maintenance activities. 
17. Contact the necessary trades and/or contractors or appropriate specialists to resolve operational or equipment problems. 

18. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines. 
19. Participate in hospital training as required.  
20. Assist with improvement initiatives as required. 

21. Perform other duties as required.   

 

QUALIFICATIONS 
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:   
1. Minimum of a two (2) year Diploma in power engineering from an accredited college or a related program with a 4th Class operating engineering Diploma. 

2. Certificate of Qualification as a 4th Class Operating Engineer in good standing with Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) is required. 
3. Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required. 

 

EXPERIENCE:   
1. Three (3) years’ experience working within a health care environment is preferred. 

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:   
1. Demonstrated ability to repair, maintain, and replace heating/cooling and associated equipment. 
2. Demonstrated knowledge of plumbing, mechanical and electrical systems. 

3. Demonstrated knowledge of tools, control panels, boilers, refrigeration and ventilation systems. 
4. Demonstrated ability to safely handle equipment, materials and loads of up to 18 kilograms. 
5. Demonstrated computer skills with intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, and Outlook) and advanced knowledge of Building Automation Systems.  

6. Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills.  
7. Ability to prioritize tasks. 
8. Demonstrated compliance with HSN’s privacy policy.  

9. Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients. 
10. Demonstrated ability to work independently while collaborating with internal team members and external vendors.
