Technician III

KEY FUNCTION: 

Provide laboratory services in accordance with the Policies and Procedures of the Laboratory and the Vision and Mission of HSN. Interact with patients and other health care workers to ensure that the needs of the patient are met in a caring and professional manner.

REPORTING: 

Under the general direction of the Manager, Laboratory Patient Client Services.

DUTIES:

1. Verify relevant data and ensure appropriate specimens are procured according to established protocols.
2. Procure and label laboratory specimens in accordance with established protocols.
3. Validate information according to requisition, specimen, worksheets and accept or reject specimen based on laboratory policy.
4. Discuss procedures in order to ensure informed consent and respect a patient's right to refuse treatment.
5. Meet the legal and ethical requirements of practice and consistently practice standard precautions.
6. Protect the patient's rights to acceptable standard of care.
7. Protect the confidentiality of patient information in accordance with existing legislation and hospital policies.
8. Promote the image and status of the profession of medical laboratory science by maintaining high standards of practice.
9. Perform all duties in compliance with current Occupational Health and Safety legislations and the policies and procedures of HSN.
10. Follow quality assurance policies and procedures and participate in quality assurance initiatives as required.
11. Monitor supplies for expiry dates to ensure stock rotation.
12. Assist in updating and reviewing of policies and procedures.
13. Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
14. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
15. Contribute to learner development by providing academic support, mentorship, preceptorship and supervision as required.
16. Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
17. Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
18. Perform other duties as required. 

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: 

1. Graduate of a recognized Medical Laboratory Technician/Assistant program or equivalent experience.
2. Certification with Medical Laboratory Professionals’ Association of Ontario (MLPAO) or Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) Certification with Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) is required, or if not certified, proven intent to work towards certification with either CSMLS or MLPAO is required.
3. Certified to perform phlebotomy as a delegated controlled act.
4. Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.

EXPERIENCE: 

1. Recent experience in performing resting 12 lead Electrocardiograms (ECGs), rhythm strips and 15 lead ECGs is required.
2. Recent phlebotomy experience in a hospital setting is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: 

1. Demonstrated knowledge and skill in the procurement of various types of blood samples.
2. Demonstrated knowledge and skill in the performance of ECGs.
3. Demonstrated proficiency and knowledge in the functionality of laboratory information systems (LIS).
4. Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of quality improvement methodology for process improvement.
5. Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
6. Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
7. Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
8. Demonstrated effective time management and organizational skills with the ability to organize and prioritize as required.
9. Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
10. Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
