Health Sciences North (HSN) is seeking an innovative individual for the position of Cardiac Sonographer to Operate ultrasound equipment to assist physicians in treating and diagnosing patients with cardiac disorders.
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of a minimum of a one (1) year Diploma in Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography, from an accredited college and current certificate of Registration in good standing with the College of Medical Radiation Technologists of Ontario (CMRTO). In addition, Current Registration with Sonography Canada as a Canadian Registered Cardiac Sonographer (CRCS) or with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography as a Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS). Candidates currently registered in courses to meet the educational requirements of the CRCS or RDCS and will obtain certification within six (6) months may be considered.
We are looking for someone with a minimum of minimum of two (2) years’ experience working in Transthoracic echocardiography. Candidates that possess experience working in a cardiac care setting and with electronic reporting and archiving of images is preferred.

KEY FUNCTION:
Operate ultrasound equipment to assist physicians in treating and diagnosing patients with cardiac disorders.
REPORTING:
Under the general direction of the Coordinator, Cardiac Outpatient Centre.
DUTIES:
- Perform various cardiac ultrasound diagnostic testing and assessments (e.g. two dimensional and M-mode, colour flow imaging, pulsed wave Doppler, continuous wave Doppler investigation of various cardiac windows and other hemodynamic measures).
- Acquire and record all echocardiographic images and data according to laboratory protocols.
- Monitor examination to evaluate quality and consistency of diagnostic images and make adjustments to equipment as required.
- Observe and care for patients throughout examinations to ensure patient safety and comfort.
- Record, store and process scanned images according to laboratory protocols.
- Prepare examination reports for physicians to aid in the diagnosis of cardiac disorders.
- Perform quality control checks on ultrasound equipment to ensure proper operation and perform minor repairs and adjustments as required.
- Train students and other medical sonographers as required.
- Evaluate patient care and satisfaction on an ongoing basis and formulate solutions for improvement.
- Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
- Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
- Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
- Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
- Perform other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
- Minimum of a one (1) year Diploma in Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography, from an accredited college.
- Current Certificate of Registration in good standing with the College of Medical Radiation Technologists of Ontario (CMRTO).
- Current Registration with Sonography Canada as a Canadian Registered Cardiac Sonographer (CRCS) or with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography as a Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS).
- OR candidates currently registered in courses to meet the educational requirements of the CRCS or RDCS and will obtain certification within six (6) months may be considered.
- Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) is required.
- Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of two (2) years’ experience working in Transthoracic echocardiography.
- Experience working in a cardiac care setting is preferred.
- Experience with electronic reporting and archiving of images is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Demonstrated knowledge of Medical Terminology.
- Demonstrated awareness of echo accreditation standards.
- Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of lean methodology for process improvement.
- Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
- Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
- Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Demonstrated effective time management and organizational skills with the ability to organize and prioritize as required.
- Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
- Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
