Health Sciences North (HSN) is seeking four innovative leaders for the role of Clinical Operations Manager (After Hours). As the successful candidate, you will provide administrative and clinical leadership, focusing on high risk issues across HSN.   You will guide and motivate all front line staff, while providing ongoing support after regular business hours. This role will also manage patient care activities, timely patient flow, appropriate resource allocation, and hospital-wide clinical and non-clinical issues.

 

The successful candidates must have a minimum of a four (4) year Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BScN), from an accredited university and current Certificate of Registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO). A minimum of five (5) years’ full-time equivalent experience working in an Acute Inpatient department, within a health care environment and a minimum of two (2) years’ full-time equivalent experience working in a leadership/supervisory role, preferably within a health care environment. Preference will be given to candidates with recent experience in patient flow.

KEY FUNCTION

Provide administrative and clinical leadership, focusing on high risk issues across HSN.   Provide ongoing support to all front line staff after regular business hours, while managing patient care activities, timely patient flow, appropriate resource allocation, and hospital-wide clinical and non-clinical issues.

 

REPORTING  

Under the general direction of the Administrative Director, Care Transitions, Patient Flow and Utilization.

 

DUTIES

  1. Ensure time sensitive issues are addressed and utilize appropriate resources as required.
  2. Respond to codes/critical incidents; follow up and assist with debrief.
  3. Conduct in person rounds for all inpatient units to support frontline teams and monitor bed allocation and patient flow in collaboration with bed allocation teams.
  4. Participate in clinical leadership meetings to ensure understanding of hospital operations and priorities as required.
  5. Design, promote, and facilitate the use of systems to ensure the provision of patient care is consistent with departmental and professional standards.
  6. Work with respective clinical teams to identify errors and formulate solutions, while supporting the delivery of optimal patient care.
  7. Coordinate day-to-day utilization of human and capacity resources to achieve department functions after hours.
  8. Serve as primary resource after hours while supporting clinical teams in coordinating patient care activities across multiple clinical care environments at HSN.
  9. Coordinate and communicate patient care activities after hours for a safe and seamless transition with appropriate transfer of accountability.
  10. Evaluate patient care and satisfaction on an ongoing basis and formulate solutions for improvement.
  11. Guide, motivate, monitor and supervise staff. 
  12. Initiate and conduct performance evaluations in accordance with HSN policy.
  13. Oversee the work of others in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), its regulations, and HSN policies.
  14. Teach, coach and lead staff in the clinical environment to support patient care and care coordination activities after hours.
  15. Engage in and foster professional development of all staff and provide opportunities for learning within budgeted resources.
  16. Ensure a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors; investigate report, debrief and take or direct corrective action as required on incidents.
  17. Participate in the accreditation process and work to ensure that the program and HSN achieve, maintain and continually improve upon their accredited status.
  18. Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
  19. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders/organizations/community groups to achieve program objectives, integrate and link services and foster partnerships across the continuum of service delivery.
  20. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
  21. Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
  22. Perform other duties as required. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: 

  1. Minimum of a four (4) year Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BScN), from an accredited university.
  2. Current Certificate of Registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).
  3. Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.

 

EXPERIENCE: 

  1. Minimum of five (5) years’ full-time equivalent experience working in an Acute Inpatient department, within a health care environment.
  2. Minimum of two (2) years’ full-time equivalent experience working in a leadership/supervisory role, preferably within a health care environment.
  3. Training or recent experience in patient flow is preferred.

  10. Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
  11. Demonstrated knowledge of relevant legislation and principles of management, hospital committee structure, conflict management and resolution, system needs analysis and organizational assessment.
  12. Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
  13. Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  14. Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
