KEY FUNCTION:
Assist dentists and dental hygienists in scheduling and performing dental and oral procedures, including examination and treatment of patients.

 

REPORTING:
Under the general direction of the Manager, Radiation Treatment.

 

DUTIES:
1. Prepare patient, sterilize and disinfect instruments, set-up instrument trays, prepare materials, and assist the dentist during dental procedures.
2. Maintain an aseptic environment by following sterilization principles and procedures.
3. Perform laboratory procedures, including pouring, trimming plaster dental models, and fabrication of oral stents, fluoride trays, and custom impression trays.
4. Take and develop X-rays.
5. Take preliminary impressions for diagnostic casts.
6. Polish teeth and clinical crowns, and apply fluoride and sealant.
7. Fabricate and place temporary crowns and restorations.
8. Perform intra-oral duties when required, including removing sutures, taking and recording vital signs, applying and removing rubber dams, and applying desensitizing agents, topical anaesthetic, and cariogenic agents.
9. Educate patients on oral hygiene.
10. Schedule appointments, prepare bills and receive payment for dental services, complete insurance forms, and maintain records.
11. Maintain office inventory and clinic maintenance reports.
12. Evaluate patient care and satisfaction on an ongoing basis and formulate solutions for improvement.
13. Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
14. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
15. Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
16. Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
17. Perform other duties as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
1. Minimum of a one (1) year Certificate as a Level II Dental Assistant, from an accredited college.
2. Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.

 

EXPERIENCE:
1. Minimum of two (2) years’ experience working as a Dental Assistant, preferably in health care environment.
2. Training or recent experience in Implant Dentistry is preferred.

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
1. Demonstrated ability to type 40 words per minute.
2. Demonstrated knowledge of Medical Terminology.
3. Demonstrated excellent judgment and proven analytical skills.
4. Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of lean methodology for process improvement.
5. Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
6. Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software, e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook and patient information systems.
7. Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
8. Demonstrated ability to manage routine correspondence, multiple tasks/projects, diversified workload and rapidly changing priorities and challenging deadlines.
9. Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
10. Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
