KEY FUNCTION:
Provide industrial therapy services for patients and maintain and distribute hospital-purchased wheelchairs.
REPORTING:
Under the general direction of the Clinical Manager, Outpatient Rehabilitation Programs.
DUTIES:
1. Provide patient care services (e.g. safety assessments in the use of power tools, technology, and workshop assessment).
2. Perform patient treatment within the guidelines of the client’s program (e.g. woodworking, pipe fitting, electrical and small engine) and modify tasks to meet patient’s abilities.
3. Work collaboratively with the therapist regarding client contacts, concerns, and provide input for treatment and discharge planning.
4. Schedule patient appointments.
5. Design and fabricate devices to interface with components of the patient’s mobility system.
6. Evaluate patient care and satisfaction on an ongoing basis and formulate solutions for improvement.
7. Keep abreast of trends in equipment and special devices for patients in the use of workshop equipment and provide technical and safety advice to different programs.
8. Maintain equipment and inventory of products required for therapy sessions and ensure a safe and clean working environment.
9. Conduct safety and maintenance checks on workshop machinery and clean and repair broken equipment.
10. Monitor departmental budget for supplies and revenues specific to wheelchair and workshop equipment maintenance.
11. Distribute, maintain, and repair hospital-owned wheelchairs, parts, commodes and cushions.
12. Prepare purchase requisitions as required.
13. Conduct weekly rounds for wheelchair parts to ensure units have appropriate wheelchairs assigned to the department.
14. Record statistical data (e.g. patient referrals, billing, ordering of parts).
15. Assist in the resolution of emergency calls from inpatient units regarding wheelchair issues.
16. Provide support and coverage to the Prosthetics and Orthotics program as required.
17. Evaluate patient care and satisfaction on an ongoing basis and formulate solutions for improvement.
18. Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
19. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
20. Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the workplace.
21. Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
22. Perform other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
1. Minimum of a two (2) year Diploma as an Orthotic and Prosthetic Technician, from an accredited College.
2. Current Certificate as a Registered Prosthetic Technician, Registered Orthotic Technician, or both is preferred.
3. Current Certificate of Qualification in Industrial Wood Working is preferred.
4. Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.
EXPERIENCE:
1. Minimum of two (2) years’ experience working as a Seating Technician or Industrial Therapy Technician, in a health care environment.

1. Demonstrated knowledge of Gross Anatomy and Kinesiology.
2. Demonstrated knowledge of medical conditions, their progression, and how they affect clients and their seating needs.
3. Demonstrated knowledge of wheelchairs.
4. Demonstrated technical skills with the ability to safely and effectively handle workshop tools and equipment.
5. Demonstrated sewing and fine motor skills.
6. Demonstrated flexibility and improvisation skills with the ability to create and to think outside of the box.
7. Demonstrated organizational and prioritization skills.
8. Demonstrated excellent judgment and proven analytical skills.
9. Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of quality improvement methodology for process improvement.
10. Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
11. Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
12. Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
13. Demonstrated ability to manage routine correspondence, multiple tasks/projects, diversified workload and rapidly changing priorities and challenging deadlines.
14. Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
15. Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
