KEY FUNCTION

Analyze, implement, and support software functionality and system integrations within HSN’s Health Care Information System (HCIS) to support a fully integrated Electronic Medical Record (EMR). Act as a bridge between clinical, technical, and vendor teams to ensure secure, reliable, and efficient data exchange between internal systems, third-party applications, and provincial repositories. Assist in implementing technology solutions in a cost-effective way by determining the requirements of a project or program, and communicating clearly to stakeholders.

 

REPORTING

Under the general direction of the Manager, Clinical Informatics and Applications.    

 

DUTIES

  1. Assist in improving processes, products, services, software and system integrations.
  2. Provide hands-on software support and assist in defining best practices across Meditech Expanse modules and integrated systems.
  3. Maintain a working knowledge of the Hospital Information System (HIS), its functions, and relationship with other information systems within and outside of HSN.
  4. Provide second level support to HIS functionality issues and integration/interface-related issues.
  5. Liaise with frontline staff, Information Technology, and vendors to translate clinical and business needs into integration and system requirements.
  6. Analyze clinical and financial workflows to identify opportunities for integration, automation, and data flow optimization.
  7. Design, support, and maintain interfaces between HCIS, third-party vendors, and provincial systems using standards (i.e. HL7, FHIR, XML, and JSON).
  8. Collaborate with integration teams to support the development, testing, and deployment of interfaces across systems.
  9. Participate in interface troubleshooting, including message validation, error handling, and workflow analysis.
  10. Develop and execute integration and interface testing plans, including unit, system, and end-to-end testing; coordinate application and other vendor interface testing.
  11. Assist in reviewing and interpreting HL7 messages (e.g., ADT, ORM, ORU, SIU) and validating data integrity across systems.
  12. Work with integration engines (e.g., BizTalk, Rhapsody) to support interface configuration and issue resolution.
  13. Create and maintain integration documentation, including interface specifications, data flow diagrams, and support procedures.
  14. Support cutover and go-live activities related to system integrations and upgrades.
  15. Monitor and escalate integration issues and work with stakeholders to ensure timely resolution.
  16. Ensure data consistency and integrity across systems and contribute to data governance practices.
  17. Lead and participate in regional discussions related to integration standards, workflows, and interoperability.
  18. Support conflict resolution and escalation processes related to system and integration issues.
  19. Collaborate with vendor and regional partners to ensure alignment with provincial integration strategies.
  20. Coordinate and participate in the successful selection, analysis, design, planning, risk assessment, implementation, training, maintenance, and evaluation of software applications.
  21. Lead project stakeholders to the most successful outcomes and assume the role of project lead as required.
  22. Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
  23. Contribute to learner development by providing academic support, mentorship, preceptorship and supervision as required.
  24. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
  25. Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
  26. Represent the department or program on various committees as required. 
  27. Perform other duties as required. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND TRAINING:

  1. Minimum of a four (4) year Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Health Sciences, Health Informatics or in a related field, from an accredited university.
  2. Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.

 

EXPERIENCE: 

  1. Minimum of two (2) years’ experience with application support, implementation, or system integration within a healthcare environment.
  2. Experience working with at least one (1) interface engine (e.g., BizTalk, Rhapsody, Cloverleaf) is required.
  3. Experience working with interfaces or data exchange between systems is preferred.
  4. Experience with Meditech Expanse or other EMR systems is preferred.

  3. Demonstrated understanding of healthcare data standards (e.g., HL7, FHIR) and system integration concepts.

  5. Demonstrated process analysis skills with the ability to assess issues and recommend solutions.
  6. Demonstrated ability to evaluate severity of issues and escalate as required.
  7. Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot data flow and interface issues across multiple systems.
  8. Demonstrated understanding of data privacy, security, and interoperability requirements in healthcare environments.
  9. Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
  10. Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software, (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
  11. Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  12. Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
  13. Demonstrated ability to manage routine correspondence, multiple tasks/projects, diversified workload and rapidly changing priorities and challenging deadlines.
  14. Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
  15. Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
