KEY FUNCTION:
Interact with patients and other healthcare workers to ensure the needs of patients are met in a caring and professional manner. Provide laboratory services in accordance with the Standards of Practice for Medical Laboratory Technologists as established by the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) and Health Sciences North/Horizon Santé-Nord (HSN).
REPORTING:
Under the general direction of the Manager, Laboratory, Anatomical Pathology.
DUTIES:
- Analyze Quality Control (QC) data for the purposes of quality control and verification of performance related to Microbiology, and implement corrective action as required.
- Ensure the accurate, precise and verifiable performance of tests and the timely reporting of results providing reliable and timely information for the Clinician.
- Ensure Insitute for Quality Management in Healthcare (IQMH) and other proficiency testing specimens are completed and reported in a timely manner.
- Perform the full range of tests and procedures related to the assigned section and/or site.
- Recognize, troubleshoot and communicate Microbiology equipment/reagent related malfunctions and initiate appropriate remedial action of policies and procedures.
- Monitor inventory and inform Charge/Senior Technologist when re-orders are required.
- Assist in the review and updating of policies and procedures.
- Maintain and improve clinical competency through commitment to personal professional development.
- Assist in the orientation, training and inservicing of staff and students.
- Participate in studies and projects as required.
- Adhere to the policies and procedures of HSN and the department.
- Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
- Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
- Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
- Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
- Perform other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
- Minimum of a three (3) year Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited college.
- Current Certificate of Registration in good standing with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) is required.
- Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of one (1) year experience working in a laboratory department within a health care environment.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Demonstrated knowledge and technical skills in a Microbiology department.
- Demonstrated ability to recognize, troubleshoot and communicate Microbiology equipment/reagent related malfunctions and initiate appropriate remedial action.
- Demonstrated knowledge in Microbiology protocols.
- Demonstrated knowledge of regulatory standards and quality programs (e.g. IQMH, Health Canada, Accreditation Canada Diagnostics (ACD), Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CSLI) guidelines and hematology best practices).
- Demonstrated ability to verify relevant data pertaining to Microbiology and ensure that specimens are procured according to established protocols.
- Demonstrated knowledge in inventory control and purchasing.
- Demonstrated ability in teaching and providing in-services to staff, colleagues and students.
- Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of quality improvement methodology for process improvement.
- Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
- Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
- Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Demonstrated ability to manage routine correspondence, multiple tasks/projects, diversified workload and rapidly changing priorities and challenging deadlines.
- Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
- Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
