Medical Laboratory Technologist

KEY FUNCTION: 

Provide laboratory services in the Hematology and Flow Cytometry area in accordance with the Standards of Practice for Medical Laboratory Technologists as established by the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) and HSN. Interact with patients and other healthcare workers to ensure the needs of patients are met in a caring and professional manner.

REPORTING:   

Under the general direction of the Manager, Laboratory, Clinical Pathology.

DUTIES:

1. Analyze Quality Control (QC) data for the purposes of quality control and verification of test results related to Hematology and Flow Cytometry and implement corrective action as required.
2. Ensure the accurate, precise and verifiable performance of tests and the timely reporting of results providing reliable and timely information for the Clinician.
3. Operate the Flow Cytometer and automated Pipettor and work closely with the Hematopathologists.
4. Ensure Institute for Quality Management in Healthcare (IQMH) and other proficiency testing specimens are completed and reported in a timely manner.
5. Perform the full range of tests and procedures related to the assigned section and/or site.
6. Recognize, troubleshoot and communicate equipment/reagent related malfunctions and initiate appropriate remedial action in a timely manner.
7. Monitor inventory and inform Charge or Senior Technologist when re-orders are required.
8. Assist in the review and updating of policies and procedures.
9. Maintain and improve clinical competency through commitment to personal professional development.
10. Follow safety practices and standard precautions.
11. Protect the confidentiality of all patient information in accordance with existing legislation and hospital policies.
12. Work collaboratively and communicate effectively to ensure safe and effective delivery of service.
13. Assist in the orientation, training and inservicing of staff and students.
14. Participate in studies and projects as required.
15. Adhere to the policies and procedures of HSN and the department.
16. Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
17. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
18. Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
19. Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
20. Perform other duties as required. 

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: 

1. Minimum of a three (3) year Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited college.
2. Current Certificate of Registration in good standing with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) is required.
3. Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.

EXPERIENCE: 

1. Minimum of three (3) years experience working as a Medical Laboratory Technologist in the area of Hematology and Flow Cytometry.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: 

1. Demonstrated ability to verify relevant data pertaining to Hematology and ensure appropriate specimens are procured according to established protocols.
2. Demonstrated knowledge in the application of the principles of microscopy to laboratory analyses as they apply to the Hematology department.
3. Demonstrated knowledge in cell morphology with the strong ability to distinguish between normal and abnormal cells.
4. Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of medical laboratory sciences basing practice on current techniques and scientific knowledge.
5. Demonstrated ability to recognize, troubleshoot and communicate equipment / reagent related malfunctions and initiate appropriate remedial action.
6. Demonstrated ability to effectively analyze QC findings for the purposes of quality control, verification of performance, and implement corrective action as required.
7. Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of quality improvement methodology for process improvement.
8. Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
9. Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
10. Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
11. Demonstrated strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize workload.
12. Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
13. Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
