Medical Laboratory Technologist

KEY FUNCTION: 

Interact with patients and other healthcare workers to ensure the needs of patients are met in a caring and professional manner. Provide laboratory services in accordance with the Standards of Practice for Medical Laboratory Technologists as established by the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) and HSN.

REPORTING: 

Under the general direction of the Manager, Laboratory, Anatomical Pathology.

DUTIES:

1. Analyze Quality Control (QC) data for the purposes of quality control and verification of performance related to Genomics, and implement corrective action as required.
2. Perform components of Genomics testing to include extractions of RNA/DNA, Polymerase Chain Reactions (PCR), harvest of blood and bone marrow and FISH slides.
3. Ensure the accurate, precise and verifiable performance of tests and the timely reporting of results providing reliable and timely information for the Clinician.
4. Ensure Insitute for Quality Management in Healthcare (IQMH) and other proficiency testing specimens are completed and reported in a timely manner.
5. Perform the full range of tests and procedures related to the assigned section and/or site.
6. Recognize, troubleshoot and communicate Genomics equipment/reagent related malfunctions and initiate appropriate remedial action of policies and procedures.
7. Monitor inventory and inform Charge/Senior Technologist when re-orders are required.
8. Assist in the review and updating of policies and procedures.
9. Maintain and improve clinical competency through commitment to personal professional development.
10. Assist in the orientation, training and inservicing of staff and students.
11. Participate in studies and projects as required.
12. Adhere to the policies and procedures of HSN and the department.
13. Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
14. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
15. Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
16. Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
17. Perform other duties as required. 

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: 

1. Minimum of an Advanced Diploma in the Genetics Technology Program from an accredited college.
2. Current Certificate of Registration in good standing with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists Of Ontario (CMLTO) is required.
3. Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.

EXPERIENCE: 

1. Recent and relevant experience in clinical genomic testing is required.
2. Experience with nucleic acid extraction and handling, PCR (end point, real-time, digital), capillary electrophoresis for fragment length analysis and high-throughput sequencing is required.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: 

1. Demonstrated ability to perform components of Genomics testing to include extractions of RNA/DNA, PCR, harvest of blood and bone marrow, FISH slides.
2. Demonstrated Genomics knowledge of the principles of medical laboratory sciences basing practice on current techniques and scientific knowledge.
3. Demonstrated ability to recognize, troubleshoot and communicate Genomics equipment/reagent related malfunctions and initiate appropriate remedial action.
4. Demonstrated ability to verify relevant data pertaining to Genomics and ensure that appropriate specimens are procured according to established protocols.
5. Demonstrated knowledge of regulatory standards and quality programs (i.e. Accreditation Canada Diagnostics (ACD), IQMH and Clinical and Laboraotry Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines).
6. Demonstrated ability to effectively analyze QC findings.
7. Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of lean methodology for process improvement.
8. Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
9. Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
10. Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
11. Demonstrated effective time management and organizational skills with the ability to organize and prioritize as required.
12. Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
13. Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
