KEY FUNCTION:
Engage in a two year training program addressing all aspects of clinical radiation oncology physics, including evaluation of radiation treatment equipment performance, equipment calibration, radiation treatment planning and delivery, radiation safety, and radiation oncology informatics. Participate in clinically oriented research and be actively involved in teaching.

 

REPORTING:
Under the general direction of the Chief Physicist and Manager, Medical Physics.

 

DUTIES:
1. Perform hands-on medical physics tasks including calibrations, measurements, and radiation safety measurements on various clinical pieces.
2. Complete a series of Learning Modules and Clinical Rotations in various topics in Medical Physics in accordance with the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) Medical Physics Residency Education Program.
3. Develop and complete a Clinical Research Project involving a project of interest to the Department of Medical Physics.
4. Participate in clinical Radiation Oncology rounds.
5. Particpiate in Medical Physics meetings and departmental projects
6. Complete reports and documentation for various medical physics projects as required.
7. Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
8. Contribute to learner development by providing academic support, mentorship, preceptorship and supervision as required.
9. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
10. Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
11. Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
12. Perform other duties as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
1. Graduate of a Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Program (CAMPEP) accredited MSc or PhD graduate program, or possess a PhD in physics or related discipline and have completed a CAMPEP-accredited certificate program, or possess a PhD in physics or related discipline and have satisfactorily completed courses equivalent to those in a CAMPEP-accredited certificate program, as determined by the CAMPEP Graduate Education Program Review Committee (GEPRC).
2. Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.

 

EXPERIENCE:
1. Experience working in a medical physics department within a health care environment is preferred.

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
1. Demonstrated graduate-level knowledge in radiation physics and radiation protection.
2. Demonstrated ability to teach.
3. Demonstrated ability to perform research and development in Clinical Physics or a related field.
4. Demonstrated high degree of interest, enthusiasm, and commitment to patient care.
5. Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of lean methodology for process improvement.
6. Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
7. Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
8. Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
9. Demonstrated strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize workload.
10. Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
11. Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
