KEY FUNCTION

Perform tasks for patients to support activities of daily living.  Clean, process and sterilize supplies and equipment dispensed in patient care areas while following Infection Control practices/procedures. Stock and reorder patient care supplies.

 

REPORTING

Under the general direction of the Clinical Manager, Emergency.

 

DUTIES:

  1. Prepare equipment for disinfecting or sterilization.
  2. Operate equipment for disinfecting or sterilizing in accordance with Canadian Standards Association and the manufacturer’s instructions ensuring sterilization parameters are met.
  3. Identify items whose shelf life has expired and pull from use.
  4. Rotate/restock all items in accordance with use by dates to reduce spoilage and waste in medical and surgical cupboards and carts.
  5. Perform cleaning of patient care areas including cupboards, shelves, and drawers
  6. Assist nurses, hospital staff, and physicians in providing care to patients with their basic care, physical exercise, feeding, personal hygiene and all activities of daily living.
  7. Perform vital sign measurement.
  8. Interact with patients, families and visitors providing information and support.
  9. Protect and promote the welfare, dignity, and individual rights of patients at all times.
  10. Assist with patient flow and transportation of patients to other departments/units.
  11. Transfer, deliver and/or collect: linen, rubbish, infectious waste, specimens, dietary trays, and equipment.
  12. Operate mechanical lifts and utilize assistive devices as directed.
  13. Participate in inventory control procedures and order verification as required.
  14. Order and restock direct purchases of department supplies as required.
  15. Monitor and restock Reprocessing department inventory.
  16. Enter requisitions for maintenance of equipment and building services as required.
  17. Provide patient care within Personal Support Worker scope of practice as required.
  18. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
  19. Participate in hospital training as required.
  20. Assist with improvement initiatives as required.
  21. Perform other duties as required. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: 

  1. Minimum of a Personal Support Worker Certificate from an accredited college.
  2. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certificate is required.
  3. Current certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) and Gentle persuasion approaches (GPA) to dementia care are preferred.
  4. Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.

 

EXPERIENCE: 

  1. Minimum of six (6) months’ experience working as a Personal Support Worker in a hospital setting.

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: 

  1. Demonstrated knowledge of Medical Asepsis.
  2. Demonstrated ability to safely handle equipment, materials and loads of up to18 kilograms.
  3. Demonstrated ability to effectively interact and communicate with patients, families, and healthcare workers.
  4. Demonstrated ability to deal effectively and co-operatively with all levels of staff, patients, physicians, volunteers and the public.
  5. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and efficiently as a team member in a fast paced environment.
  6. Demonstrated working knowledge of equipment used in the delivery of patient care.
  7. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA)/Ontario Medical Association’s (OMA) Communicable Disease Surveillance Protocols.
  8. Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
  9. Demonstrated computer skills with intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and applicable patient information systems.
  10. Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills.
  11. Ability to prioritize tasks. 
  12. Demonstrated compliance with HSN’s privacy policy.
  13. Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
