KEY FUNCTION:
Develop, coordinate and implement clinical education and training within Pediatrics and Pediatric Step Up Units in keeping with the family-centered care philosophy and support other inpatient and outpatient components of the program. Support the delivery of quality patient care and excellence in professional and clinical nursing practice. Act as a role model in accordance with the College of Nurses of Ontario Professional Standards and HSN’s Mission, Vision and Values in both formal and informal learning environments.
REPORTING:
Under the general direction of the Clinical Manager, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Pediatrics Unit.
DUTIES:
- Foster a positive learning environment; provide guidance and support the ongoing education of staff.
- Develop, implement and evaluate staff development/orientation programs based on learning needs, clinical practice standards, treatment trends, technical changes, certification requirements and relevant research findings.
- Provide/deliver educational programs/content offering mentorship through clinical expertise to new nurses and through continuing education opportunities.
- Conduct education needs assessment for the purpose of targeted education strategies and programs-based learner needs.
- Organize educational opportunities for nursing staff based on HSN program’s strategic plan and education needs identified by the Program Director, Clinical Managers, Nurse Clinicians and Unit Nurses.
- Structure education and incorporate principles of adult education, in a creative way, to promote maximum participation and learning.
- Evaluate activities and outcomes with evaluations and audits.
- Provide constructive feedback to assist staff in improving their performance.
- Check and adjust quality improvement process in the education program to ensure content is current and evidence-based.
- Facilitate and provide assistance in the development of unit-specific programs, plans of care, standards of care, clinical pathways, etc. to assist with the delivery of quality patient care.
- Provide leadership in the design and implementation of patient, family and staff teaching and education programs.
- Address professional practice issues within the nursing profession.
- Support health care students in the clinical setting.
- Work collaboratively with other clinicians to revise clinical orientation programs based on evaluations and/or policies, procedures and protocol updates and develop new education initiatives for orientation programs as required.
- Network and maintain linkages with external stakeholders, including clinical experts/educators in academic centres and the healthcare community regarding nursing education, practice and professional development.
- Maintain clinical knowledge and competency, with emphasis on clinical specialty.
- Maintain knowledge of current research relating to nursing specialty and collaborate in the research process as required.
- Identify and introduce clinically significant research findings to members of patient care team and program.
- Evaluate patient care and satisfaction on an ongoing basis and formulate solutions for improvement.
- Oversee the work of others in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), its regulations, and HSN policies.
- Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
- Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
- Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
- Participate on various committees and in meetings as required.
- Perform other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
- Minimum of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing BSc(N) or Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNSc).
- Current Certificate of Registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Master’s Degree or actively pursuing a Master’s is preferred.
- Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certificate is required.
- Current Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certificate is required.
- Current certification in Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS) is required.
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Instructor certification is preferred.
- Pediatric Emergency Assessment Recognition and Stabilization (PEARS) Instructor certification is preferred.
- Current certification in Neonatal Resuscitation Provider (NRP) is required.
- Unit-specific certification, training and education is required.
- Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of five (5) years, full-time equivalent clinical experience in Pediatrics and Critical Care within the last seven (7) years.
- Adult / Pediatrics Intensive Care experience is preferred.
- Minimum two (2) years recent, relevant teaching experience of clinical adult education programs or equivalent is preferred.
- Recent experience in the application of Best Practice Guidelines to the care of patients.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Demonstrated expertise as an educator using the principles of adult learning.
- Demonstrated ability to develop, implement, and evaluate clinical education methodologies and assessment instruments.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the relevant acts, regulations, and standards related to Occupational Health and Safety in the hospital setting.
- Demonstrated strong organizational skills with the ability to manage a diversified workload, rapidly changing priorities and challenging deadlines.
- Demonstrated high levels of initiative, self-direction, and an innovative approach to problem solving.
- Demonstrated training, experience, or utilization of quality improvement methodology for process improvement.
- Demonstrated skills in organizing resources, analyzing and solving problems, establishing priorities and making evaluative judgements.
- Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
- Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
- Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
