Health Sciences North (HSN) is seeking an innovative leader for the position of Nurse Practitioner to provide primary care supports and medical management of substance use disorders. Function as a practitioner, leader, consultant, educator, and advocate in a multidisciplinary care team in the implementation, evaluation, and provision of high quality, client-centered care.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of a Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner Graduate Diploma and current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario. We are looking for someone with a minimum of three (3) to five (5) years’ of experience as a Nurse Practitioner in an addictions service role. Candidates that possess Master’s or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field is preferred.

Standard Qualifications:

  • Graduate from an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program.
  • Current Certificate of Registration as RN (Extended Class) in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certificate is required.
  • Current certification in Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is required.
  • Current certification in Non-violent crisis intervention is required.
  • Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.
  • Current specialty certificate in Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner is required.
  • Trained in prescribing controlled substances per CNO requirements.
  • Successful Vulnerable Sector Check is required.

 

Experience:

  • Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years’ of experience as a Nurse Practitioner in an addictions service role.
  • Experience working with homeless and precariously housed population.
  • Experience in the development of strategies to build capacity and improve health outcomes.
  • Experience in the development of clinical guidelines and protocols, promoting the use of research and evidence-based practice to guide client-centered care.
  • Experience specific to care of individuals struggling with addictions and substance use disorders.
  • Experience specific to the implementation of trauma informed care.
  • Experience in culturally safe care provision.

 

General Skills:

  • Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge of advanced nursing practice/theory, health management, health promotion, and disease/injury prevention to provide health services with a focus in addictions service care.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the nursing process and its application, including the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care related to addictions service provision.
  • Knowledge of social determinants of health and their impact on marginalized populations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of evidence-based practices of harm reduction philosophies and recovery principles.
  • Proven leadership abilities with high levels of critical and logical thinking, analysis, and reasoning.
  • Demonstrated high levels of initiative, resourcefulness, flexibility and adaptability.
  • Demonstrated commitment to client and family-centered care.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and in a collaborative practice model as a member of an inter-professional team.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the relevant acts, regulations, legislation and standards related to Occupational Health and Safety in the hospital setting.
  • Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of process improvement methodology.
  • Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software, e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook and patient information systems.
  • Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Demonstrated time management skills with the ability to manage workload and adapt quickly to a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
  • Successful Vulnerable Sector Check is required.
  • Demonstrated positive performance record and the ability to meet the job expectations and performance standards required of this position.
  • Ability to use tact and discretion in dealing with healthcare providers and patients.

Preference Given to:

  • Master’s or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field is preferred.
  • Completion of the Centre for Addictions and Mental Health Opioid Use Disorder Treatment course is preferred.

Bilingualism requirements will be posted in accordance with the FLS Designation Plan.  If a position is designated bilingual and no bilingual candidates (both internal and external) meet the qualifications, unilingual candidates may be considered.
