KEY FUNCTION:
Maintain products and perform preparation duties to provide enteral nutritional feedings for patients within the department. Perform hearing screening, record and relay information and maintain equipment and supplies related to hearing screening within the North East Infant Hearing Program.
REPORTING:
Under the general direction of the Clinical Manager, NICU and Pediatrics.
DUTIES:
- Perform calculations and computerize order-entry for verification.
- Fortify and prepare human breast milk and formula for neonates and infants in NICU and Pediatrics.
- Collaborate with the NICU/Pediatrics Registered Dietitian to support patient feeds.
- Create, prepare and maintain patient profiles in support of direct patient care activities.
- Communicate trends, queries, and concerns to dietitians.
- Generate product labels, deliver products to patient care areas and verify expiration dates on all products.
- Maintain inventory and complete purchase requisitions for supplies through Food Services and Materials Management.
- Work collaboratively with Wordplay North East Regional Infant Hearing Program to ensure hearing screens are completed for inpatients and discharged patients.
- Perform bilateral hearing tests on infants in the NICU, Pediatrics, and Labour and Delivery ward and apply the hearing screening protocol and guidelines.
- Complete referral documentation by the North East Regional Infant Hearing Program as required.
- Consult with the North East Regional Infant Hearing Screening Program as required.
- Clean, maintain and order supplies and equipment.
- Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
- Contribute to learner development by providing academic support, mentorship, preceptorship and supervision as required.
- Participate in hospital training as required.
- Assist with improvement initiatives as required.
- Perform other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
- Minimum of a Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent (i.e. General Education Development (GED) or Academic and Career Entrance (ACE)).
- Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.
EXPERIENCE:
- Six (6) months recent and relevant experience is preferred.
- Six (6) months of direct patient care experience for hearing screening is preferred.
- Experience working with newborns and premature infants is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Demonstrated knowledge of aseptic techniques.
- Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency with medical terminology.
- Demonstrated ability to perform metric and mathematical calculations.
- Demonstrated knowledge of unit-dose distribution.
- Demonstrated proficiency in data entry.
- Demonstrated computer skills with intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, and Outlook) and applicable patient information systems.
- Demonstrated ability to type a minimum of 45 w.p.m.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively interact and communicate with patients, families, and healthcare workers.
- Demonstrated attention to detail and good organizational skills.
- Demonstrated ability to commit to standards of excellence and concept of accountability.
- Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks.
- Demonstrated compliance with HSN’s privacy policy.
