KEY FUNCTION:

Assist Occupational Therapists (OT) in providing effective and efficient therapy and treatment services, in performing the daily maintenance of the department, and in the facilitation of operational issues.

 

REPORTING:

Under the general direction of the Manager, Outpatient Rehabilitation Programs.

 

DUTIES:

  1. Work with the OTs to develop treatment plan for patients.
  2. Assist patients with treatment plan and instruct on how to use equipment/devices to assist with daily activities.
  3. Maintain patient files to document progress and report details to the therapists.
  4. Interact with other health care professionals to keep abreast of client progress.
  5. Monitor patients’ progress and re-evaluate treatment plan with OT as required.
  6. Prepare patient file for release to Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB), Medical Records, lawyer request, and other health care providers with patient consent.
  7. Evaluate patient care and satisfaction on an ongoing basis and formulate solutions for improvement.
  8. Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
  9. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
  10. Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
  11. Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required. 
  12. Perform other duties as required. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

EDUCATION AND TRAINING:

  1. Minimum of a two (2) year Diploma as an Occupational Therapist Assistant, from an accredited college.
  2. Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.

 

EXPERIENCE:

  1. Minimum of two (2) years’ experience working in Occupational Therapy within a health care environment.

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  1. Demonstrated ability to instruct and guide patients through recommended treatment programs both individually and in groups.
  2. Demonstrated ability to safely handle and maintain equipment, and fabricate devices (e.g. sewing).
  3. Demonstrated ability to assist patients in performance of therapeutic activities, work hardening, and scar management.
  4. Demonstrated good judgment and problem-solving skills.
  5. Demonstrated excellent presentation skills.
  6. Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of lean methodology for process improvement.
  7. Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
  8. Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
  9. Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  10. Demonstrated strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize workload.
  11. Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
  12. Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
