KEY FUNCTION:
Provide organizational support and quality patient care, including the application of casts, splints, and other immobilization devices under the direction of a credentialed physician holding HSN privileges and/or an Orthopaedic Technologist Advanced.
REPORTING:
Under the general direction of the Clinical Manager, Ambulatory Care Services.
DUTIES:
1. Apply, adjust, remove, and repair casts, braces, splints, and various traction devices under the direction of the physician.
2. Apply and remove dressings, assess condition of wounds, and seek direction for further treatment as required.
3. Measure and fit patients for orthopaedic devices and ambulatory aids.
4. Educate patients on care and proper use of devices.
5. Remove staples, sutures, K-wires, pins, and external fixators by using appropriate techniques.
6. Assist physician with procedures, including preparation of sterile trays.
7. Interpret x-rays to reduce and maintain fractures properly under the direction of the physician.
8. Maintain orthopaedic equipment and ensure appropriate stock of supplies for use in department.
9. Document and maintain accurate patient notes and records.
10. Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
11. Evaluate patient care and satisfaction on an ongoing basis and formulate solutions for improvement.
12. Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
13. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
14. Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
15. Perform other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
1. Minimum of a one (1) year Diploma as an Orthopaedic Technologist from an accredited college or equivalent apprenticeship program based on the Canadian Society of Orthopaedic Technologist (CSOT) Preceptorship Guidelines.
2. Current Certificate of Registration with the CSOT.
3. Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.
EXPERIENCE:
1. Minimum of two (2) years’ experience working as an Orthopaedic Technician or apprentice in a Fracture/Cast/Emergency Clinic department within a health care environment.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
1. Demonstrated knowledge of cast application, adjustment and removal, and fabrication and application of splints and bandages.
2. Demonstrated knowledge of all traction devices.
3. Demonstrated knowledge of anatomy and physiology related to orthopaedics, orthopaedic diseases and injuries, and aseptic techniques.
4. Demonstrated knowledge of responsibilities related to legal and medical ethics.
5. Demonstrated knowledge of Medical Terminology.
6. Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of quality improvement methodology for process improvement.
7. Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
8. Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software, (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
9. Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
10. Demonstrated ability to manage routine correspondence, multiple tasks/projects, diversified workload and rapidly changing priorities and challenging deadlines.
11. Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
12. Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
