KEY FUNCTION:
Work collaboratively with Pharmacist and Pharmacy Technician to ensure safe medication distribution according to the standards and guidelines of the Ontario College of Pharmacists.

 

REPORTING:
Under the general direction of the Manager, Pharmacy Operations.

 

DUTIES:
1. Assist with the preparation and dispensing of medication for inpatients and outpatients.
2. Assist with sterile/non- sterile compounding.
3. Utilize and ensure functionality of packaging automation (e.g. Swisslog Pillpicker, ARxium FastPak, etc.) to package medications into unit doses.
4. Receive, sort and put away medications in appropriate areas of the pharmacy.
5. Check stock for expiry dates to identify beyond use dated medications to be returned and/or destroyed.
6. Order, receive and sort pharmaceutical supplies as required.
7. Maintain department work areas by ensuring tidiness.
8. Operate cash register and handle medication transactions for the outpatient pharmacy.
9. Deliver or send medications to the appropriate units.
10. Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
11. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
12. Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
13. Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
14. Perform other related duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
1. Minimum of a graduate from a Pharmacy Assistant program or a relevant Health Care program from an accredited college.
2. Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.

 

EXPERIENCE:
1. Three (3) years’ experience in a retail/hospital pharmacy setting is preferred.
2. Additional health care experience is preferred.

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
1. Demonstrated experience in unit dose medication distribution system.
2. Demonstrated excellent judgment and proven analytical skills.
3. Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of lean methodology for process improvement.
4. Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
5. Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
6. Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
7. Demonstrated ability to manage routine correspondence, multiple tasks/projects, diversified workload and rapidly changing priorities and challenging deadlines.
8. Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
9. Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
