KEY FUNCTION:
Provide scientific expertise to the cancer centre through the application of physics to medicine. Conduct research and development work in applied Radiation Oncology Physics.
REPORTING:
Under the general direction of the Chief Physicist & Manager, Medical Physics.
DUTIES:
1. Conduct independent research projects in Radiation Oncology Physics.
2. Develop new methods, algorithms, or software for radiation therapy and medical imaging applications.
3. Implement new techniques and technologies in clinical settings, collaborating with medical physicists and clinicians.
4. Work with other researchers, clinicians, and healthcare professionals to advance the field of medical physics.
5. Write and publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and presenting them at scientific conferences.
6. Mentor junior researchers and graduate students in the field of medical physics.
7. Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
8. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
9. Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
10. Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
11. Perform other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
1. Minimum of a PhD Degree in Physics, from an accredited university.
2. Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.
EXPERIENCE:
1. Experience working in a medical physics department within a health care environment is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
1. Graduate level knowledge in radiation physics and radiation protection.
2. Demonstrated ability to perform research and development in Clinical Physics or a related field.
3. Demonstrated ability to teach.
4. Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of quality improvement methodology for process improvement.
5. Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
6. Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
7. Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
8. Demonstrated effective time management and organizational skills with the ability to organize and prioritize as required.
9. Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
10. Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
