Recreation Therapist

KEY FUNCTION:   

Assess patient’s recreation and leisure needs, develop treatment plans and programs, provide therapeutic programs and interventions to meet these needs, and evaluate the client’s progress.

REPORTING: 

Under the general direction of the Clinical Manager, Integrated Chronic Pain, Outpatient Brain Injury Rehabilitation Services (OBIRS), Chronic Disease Self-Management and HAVEN/Hemophilia.

DUTIES:

1. Develop a treatment plan to meet the needs of the patient based on needs assessment, patient interests, and objectives of therapy.
2. Prepare and deliver education to people living with a chronic condition.
3. Observe, analyze, and record patients' participation, reactions, and progress during treatment sessions; modify treatment programs as required.
4. Encourage clients with special needs and circumstances to acquire new skills and get involved in health-promoting leisure activities.
5. Evaluate patient care and satisfaction on an ongoing basis and formulate solutions for improvement.
6. Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
7. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
8. Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
9. Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required. 
10. Perform other duties as required. 

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: 

1. Minimum of a two (2) year Diploma in Therapeutic Recreation, from an accredited college.
2. Current Certificate of Registration with the Therapeutic Recreation of Ontario (TRO) is preferred.
3. Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.

EXPERIENCE: 

1. Minimum of two (2) years’ experience working in a related clinical department within a health care environment.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: 

1. Demonstrated knowledge of Community Agencies, Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (MoHLTC), and other health and social services and rehabilitation resources.
2. Demonstrated knowledge of Medical Terminology.
3. Demonstrated excellent judgment and proven analytical skills.
4. Demonstrated ability to mentor therapy assistants.
5. Demonstrated ability to provide education to people living with a chronic condition.
6. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA)/Ontario Medical Association’s (OMA) Communicable Disease Surveillance Protocols.
7. Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of lean methodology for process improvement.
8. Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
9. Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
10. Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
11. Demonstrated ability to manage routine correspondence, multiple tasks/projects, diversified workload and rapidly changing priorities and challenging deadlines.
12. Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
13. Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.

PERSONAL SUITABILITY:

2. Ability to use tact and discretion in dealing with health care providers and patients.
3. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary team.

8. Ability to meet the physical and sensory demands of the job.
9. Ability to travel between local sites.
