Purpose:
To provide specialized psychiatric/mental health nursing care to children and youth with a mental illness in a mixed modality acute and treatment inpatient program, utilizing the framework of the Canadian Standards of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing.
Education and Training:
- A graduate from an approved School of Nursing (Registered Practical Nursing Program) with a current certificate of competence with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Current certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention.
- Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support BCLS (if not current must be obtained within 3 months)
- Must have relevant experience working within full scope of practice, including medication administration, within the last two (2) years.
- Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.
- Completion of RPN standardization (all modules) required.
Experience:
- Demonstrated recent and relevant experience in providing assessment, treatment, monitoring and evaluation of patients of various age groups with a wide range of psychiatric diagnosis in an inpatient psychiatric unit.
- Demonstrated ability to understand, interpret and explain current Children’s Mental Health and Ministry of Child and Youth’s Services MCYS systems.
Knowledge/Skills Ability:
- Adept knowledge of person-centered care and the recovery model
- Demonstrated excellent therapeutic communication and interviewing skills specific to mental health issues/illnesses.
- Demonstrated strong client and family service orientation.
- Proven ability to meet the physical demands required to respond as an effective team member in psychiatric/crisis situations.
- demonstrated skills and experience in psychiatric emergencies
- Demonstrated patient teaching skills specific to psychiatric/mental health illnesses/issues.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Ability to work in a high paced environment.
- Computer skills including Microsoft Office software, Meditech Client Service OE, and GRASP software.
Personal Suitability:
- Positive interpersonal relationships with all team members.
- Demonstrated conflict management and ethical decision making skills.
- Demonstrated positive work record and good attendance record.
- Criminal record check satisfactory to the Hospital.
