KEY FUNCTION:
Provide direct interventions and assist Physiotherapists (PT), Occupational Therapists (OT), and Speech Language Pathologists (SLP) in the provision of effective therapy services and in the daily and on-going operation and maintenance of therapy service areas.
REPORTING:
Under the general direction of the Clinical Manager, Children's Treatment Centre; under the supervision of physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech language pathologists.
DUTIES:
- Assist the PT, OT, and SLP in individual and/or group treatment programs.
- Provide treatment as directed by the therapist, and provide instruction and assistance to children, youth, and their families.
- Document client intervention in the health record as per CTC and discipline requirements.
- Prepare equipment for specific and general client use (i.e. mobility aides, wheelchairs, exercise sheets, activity of daily living devices) and maintain a working knowledge of the use and availability of such equipment.
- Maintain a safe environment by caring for equipment and facilities and by taking remedial action as required (i.e. identify potential hazards and equipment breakdowns, remove hazards, complete maintenance requisition and notify therapists).
- Follow service specific and Occupational Health and Safety practices, including monthly workplace inspections.
- Perform various service support activities (i.e. ensure cleanliness and tidiness of equipment, environment, supply and storage areas, change linen as needed and maintain inventory of equipment and treatment supplies).
- Maintain daily workload measurement statistics.
- Assist with the orientation and teaching of new OT, PT and SLP staff and students.
- Perform administrative duties (i.e. contacting vendors, answering telephone and taking messages, photocopying, faxing, typing, scheduling, greeting/receiving patients, billing patients/families, monitoring and ordering office supplies, treatment supplies, equipment, etc.).
- Determine and align improvement projects with HSN True North; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
- Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
- Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
- Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
- Perform other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
- Minimum of a two (2) year Diploma in a related field from an accredited college.
- Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of two (2) years’ experience working in a Pediatric environment.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Demonstrated good judgment and problem solving skills.
- Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of lean methodology for process improvement.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of available mobility equipment and its use.
- Demonstrated ability to instruct and guide clients through recommended treatment programs/use modalities.
- Demonstrated effective time management and organizational skills with the ability to organize and prioritize as required.
- Demonstrated ability to safely handle and maintain equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to assess client’s ability to endure treatment.
- Demonstrated knowledge and familiarity of client monitoring alarms.
- Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
- Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
- Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
- Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
PERSONAL SUITABILITY:
- Successful criminal reference check is required for vulnerable sector
- Demonstrated ability to take direction, show initiative, and be self-directed as required.

- Valid driver’s license with access to reliable vehicle.
