Laboratory Technician

Year Contract - with the possibility of renewal

 

Project " Studies of the Interactions between the Microbiome and Patients."

The successful candidate will report to Dr. Gustavo Ybazeta at Health Sciences North Research Institute (HSNRI) and the lab manager.

 

Areas of Responsibility / Scope of Research

 The successful candidate will be responsible for the laboratory's day-to-day operations and work with Dr. Ybazeta and the lab manager to achieve the defined aims. The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

  • Collecting and bringing the samples from the hospital to HSN.
  • Curating information about samples from different projects.
  • Receiving and sending samples to or from multiple institutions following set protocols
  • conducting DNA/RNA extractions of complex matrix from body fluids and environmental samples
  • performing PCR reactions for enrichment/identification and characterization
  • preparation of sequencing reactions and running a MinION instrument 
  • post running analysis/calling sequences
  • curating and preparing data for post sequences analysis

 

Requirements:

Education and Experience

  • must have a minimum of a B.Sc (M.Sc preferred) in a relevant field (Microbiology, Virology and Bio-molecular Sciences)
  • Experience in molecular biology technics, extraction and DNA sequence is an asset
  • Experience and/or an aptitude for learning R and other bioinformatics tools. 

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • experience conducting DNA/RNA extractions
  • experience in RT-PCR and PCR methodologies and subsequent data analysis
  • knowledge of viral and microbial culture techniques for biosafety level 2 microorganisms
  • knowledge of molecular biology techniques
  • DNA and RNA sequencing experience, but you are going to be 
  • strong communication skills (oral and written) in English
  • proven ability to work and learn with supervision in the laboratory

We are looking for a team player, highly motivated and attentive to details.

 

Working Conditions Hours

  • 37.5 hours weekly

 

Salary:

  • $45,000 to $50,000, or commensurate with skills and experience.

Duration:

  • One-year contract, with the possibility of extension depending on funding
