KEY FUNCTION:

Provide technical guidance, support and expertise to the Histology department with a specialized focus on Immunohistochemistry. Direct the daily workload of others to ensure that proper techniques are utilized and that work output meets established standards.

 

REPORTING:

Under the general direction of the Manager, Laboratory (Anatomical Pathology).

 

DUTIES:

  1. Responsible for validating and implementing new antibody protocols.
  2. Work closely with the Pathologists to ensure specimens are processed in a timely manner.
  3. Maintain and support the Quality Management System for the Histology department in compliance with Accreditation Canada Diagnostics.
  4. Effectively analyze and verify Quality Control (QC) data from laboratory tests to ensure patient results are accurate and reliable and implement corrective action as required.
  5. Work collaboratively and communicate effectively to ensure safe and effective delivery of service.
  6. Provide clinical and technical guidance to assigned staff and other health care professionals.
  7. Direct and prioritize daily workload to staff and ensure adequate coverage for scheduled breaks.
  8. Assist with the development and review of Standard Operating Procedures and policies, quality improvement initiatives and quality control programs as related to their section.
  9. Ensure the accurate, precise and verifiable performance of tests and the timely reporting of results to provide reliable and timely information.
  10. Complete and report Institute of Quality Management in Healthcare (IQMH) and other proficiency testing specimens in a timely manner.
  11. Perform the full range of tests and procedures related to the assigned section and/or site.
  12. Recognize, troubleshoot, and communicate equipment/reagent related malfunctions and initiate appropriate remedial action in a timely manner.
  13. Assist in the evaluation of new equipment and procedures.
  14. Monitor inventory and initiate re-orders as required.
  15. Participate in studies and projects as required.
  16. Evaluate patient care and satisfaction on an ongoing basis and formulate solutions for improvement.
  17. Oversee developmental strategies and follow government body and organizational policies to ensure data is private, confidential, and protected.
  18. Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
  19. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
  20. Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
  21. Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required. 
  22. Perform other duties as required. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: 

  1. Minimum of a three (3) year Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited college.
  2. Current Certificate of Registration in good standing with the College Of Medical Laboratory Technologists Of Ontario (CMLTO) is required.
  3. Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.

 

EXPERIENCE: 

  1. Minimum of three (3) years of recent and relevant clinical experience in the areas of Histology including Immunohistochemistry and within the last five (5) years.
  2. Recent and relevant experience using lab equipment (i.e. Benchmark Ultra and Immunohistochemistry instruments).
  3. Three (3) years experience training, coaching, teaching, and mentoring staff, students and colleagues is preferred.

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: 

  1. Demonstrated technical skills and knowledge in Histology and Immunohistochemistry.
  2. Demonstrated ability to recognize, troubleshoot and communicate Histology and Immunohistochemistry equipment/reagent related malfunctions and initiate appropriate remedial action.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge in Immunohistochemistry protocols.
  4. Demonstrated knowledge of regulatory standards and quality programs (e.g. IQMH, Health Canada, Accreditation Canada, Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines and Histology best practices).
  5. Demonstrated ability to verify relevant data pertaining to Histology and Immunohistochemistry and ensure that specimens are procured according to established protocols.
  6. Demonstrated knowledge in inventory control and purchasing.
  7. Demonstrated ability in teaching and providing in-services to staff, colleagues and students.
  8. Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of quality improvement methodology for process improvement.
  9. Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
  10. Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
  11. Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  12. Demonstrated ability to manage routine correspondence, multiple tasks/projects, diversified workload and rapidly changing priorities and challenging deadlines.
  13. Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
  14. Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
