KEY FUNCTION:
Oversee the control of licensed activity and the nuclear substances and radiation devices of the Nuclear Medicine and Nuclear Cardiology Departments.
REPORTING:
Under the general direction of the Manager, Medical Imaging.
DUTIES:
-
Monitor and consult in all issues related to the handling of nuclear substances and radiation devices in accordance with regulations and license conditions.
-
Ensure adequate radiation safety and protection procedure training for all staff required to use nuclear devices and substances.
-
Designate workers as Nuclear Energy Workers in accordance with the Canadian Nuclear Services Commission (CNSC).
-
Ensure ongoing compliance with regulatory requirements of operations or license and amend procedures as required.
-
Develop and implement standards for inspection and review licensed activities, worker training and safety procedures and storage requirements.
-
Review requests for authorization to purchase or use nuclear devices or substances to ensure radioactive material location, storage and disposal comply with the regulations and license requirements.
-
Ensure appropriate personnel monitoring program adhere with regulations pertaining to administration, use, maintenance and recording of results for personal monitoring devices.
-
Investigate any overexposure, accident or loss of nuclear substances, perform root cause analysis to prevent recurrence and report documented findings to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) and other relevant authorities in accordance with regulations and license conditions.

Ensure sealed sources are lead tested and radiation monitoring instruments are calibrated in accordance with licensing.

Ensure contamination/radiation survey programs are maintained according to license conditions and regulations.

Coordinate and participate in emergency responses to accidents or incidents involving nuclear substances and radiation devices.
-
Prepare, maintain and submit all required records and reports required by the conditions of the CNSC license and regulations.

Coordinate all preventative maintenance of equipment.
-
Order Nuclear Medicine inventory for Medical and Cardiodiagnostics Imaging.
-
Perform Radium booking, patient instruction, and administration.
-
Perform I-131 Iodine Ablation or hyperthyroid treatment instruction, booking and administration.
-
Coordinate student clinical rotation for the Michener Institute Nuclear Medicine.
-
Perform Nuclear Medicine and Bone Densitometry studies as required.
-
Coordinate patient care delivery and assist with the clinical guidance and development of staff.
-
Evaluate patient care and satisfaction on an ongoing basis and formulate solutions for improvement.
-
Demonstrated ability to mentor students and support personnel.
-
Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
-
Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
-
Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
-
Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
-
Perform other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
-
Minimum of a three (3) year Advanced Diploma in Molecular Imaging, from an accredited college.
-
Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Medical Radiation and Imaging Technologists of Ontario (CMRITO).
-
Current Certificate of Registration with Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) is preferred.
-
Completion of the Radiation Safety Officer training from the Radiation Safety Institute of Canada within the last three (3) years is required.
-
Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.
EXPERIENCE:
-
Minimum of five (5) years’ experience working in a Nuclear Medicine department within a health care environment.
-
One (1) year of leadership experience is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Demonstrated superior knowledge of Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT/CT) systems, Bone densitometry, Radiopharmacy, and Position Emission Tomography (PET/CT).

Demonstrated superior knowledge of diagnostic equipment and problem solving skills relating to equipment.

Demonstrated knowledge of positioning protocols and standards.

Demonstrated ability to perform a range of diagnostic tests and procedures.

Demonstrated knowledge of Infection Prevention and Control Practices.

Demonstrated knowledge of governmental regulatory standards.

Demonstrated superior knowledge of radiation safety, protocols and protection regulations pertaining to nuclear substances and devices.

Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of lean methodology for process improvement.
-
Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.

Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.

Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.

Demonstrated effective time management and organizational skills with the ability to organize and prioritize workload as required.
