KEY FUNCTION:
Provide technical support for simulation operations, including the maintenance and repair of computerized manikins and task trainers, as well as the planning, execution, and evaluation of simulation activities.
REPORTING:
Under the general direction of the Manager, Simulation Laboratory.
DUTIES:
- Provide daily logistical support for simulation activities, including preparing, setting up, and tearing down all skills and simulation areas.
- Set up and operate healthcare and simulation equipment for clinical activities within the Simulation Lab and in-hospital departments.
- Operate and troubleshoot simulation control room equipment (e.g., cameras, audio systems and debriefing software) during live simulation events.
- Act as an embedded participant or confederate (e.g., patient, family member, or healthcare team member) during scenarios to support learning objectives.
- Apply moulage to simulators, task trainers and standardized patients to add realism to simulation activities as required.
- Conduct routine checks, maintenance, and repairs on healthcare and simulation equipment; assist in the basic fabrication, 3D printing, or customization of task trainers and scenario props to support operational needs.
- Source and manage medical supplies needed to facilitate or enhance delivery of simulation.
- Provide technical assistance, support, and training to faculty, instructors, learners, and staff in the use of simulation equipment.
- Communicate with equipment manufacturers regarding equipment updates, maintenance, troubleshooting and system problems.
- Maintain the lab consumable inventory, medical gases, and healthcare and simulation supplies.
- Wash and sterilize surgical instruments used in skills lab.
- Maintain general cleanliness, organization and tidiness of the simulation lab.
- Perform annual inventory.
- Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
- Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
- Contribute to learner development by providing academic support, mentorship, preceptorship and supervision as required.
- Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the workplace.
- Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
- Perform other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
- Minimum of a three (3) year Diploma in Health Sciences, Information Technology (IT), Biomedical Engineering, or related field.
- Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in a healthcare, medical simulation, clinical education, or healthcare IT/biomedical environment.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Demonstrated willingness to learn and troubleshoot simulators, manikin software, AV/IT systems, wired and wireless networks.
- Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology.
- Demonstrated critical thinking, judgment and analytical skills.
- Demonstrated knowledge of communicable disease protocols and infection prevention measures relevant to healthcare environments.
- Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of quality improvement methodology for process improvement.
- Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
- Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook) and patient information systems.
- Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Demonstrated ability to manage routine correspondence, multiple tasks/projects, diversified workload and rapidly changing priorities and challenging deadlines.
- Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
- Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
