KEY FUNCTION

Work in collaboration with the healthcare team under the supervision of an appointed regulated healthcare professional to provide care to patients and their families. Support the clinical and operational needs of the department.

 

REPORTING

Under the general direction of the Supervisor, Radiation Therapy.

 

DUTIES:

  1. Assist the Radiation Therapists with duties including educating patients, preparing treatment rooms and lifting, turning, transferring, transporting, and ambulating patients.
  2. Facilitate the daily flow on units by calling in-patients and answering phone calls.
  3. Where appropriate, assist in the communication of care using documentation and reporting.
  4. Perform routine quality assurance tests on a variety of technical equipment and initiate corrective action as required.
  5. Assist with treatment preparation duties, including customized accessory fabrication (e.g. moulds, immobilization devices, and other beam modifying devices).      
  6. Work collaboratively with other health care professionals to ensure quality patient care and continuing professional education.
  7. Evaluate patient care and satisfaction on an ongoing basis and formulate solutions for improvement.
  8. Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
  9. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
  10. Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
  11. Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required. 
  12. Perform audits, patient rounding and engage in departmental projects as required.
  13. Perform other duties as required.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: 

  1. Minimum of a three (3) year Bachelor’s Degree in Radiation Therapy, from an accredited university.
  2. Current Membership with the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) is preferred.
  3. Current Certificate in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is required.
  4. Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.

 

 

EXPERIENCE: 

  1. Recent experience in a successful clinical placement in a radiation therapy program is preferred.

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: 

  1. Demonstrated aptitude for problem solving and critical thinking.
  2. Ability to work independently and manage time efficiently.
  3. Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  4. Demonstrated infection prevention and control practices.
  5. Demonstrated knowledge of Medical Terminology.
  6. Demonstrated excellent judgment and proven analytical skills.
  7. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA)/Ontario Medical Association’s (OMA) Communicable Disease Surveillance Protocols.
  8. Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of lean methodology for process improvement.
  9. Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
  10. Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
  11. Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  12. Demonstrated strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize workload.
  13. Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
  14. Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
