Education and Training:

  • Graduate of a recognized Medical Laboratory Technician/Assistant program or equivalent.
  • Certification with Medical Laboratory Professionals’ Association of Ontario (MLPAO) or Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) Certification with Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS), or if not certified, proven intent to work towards certification with either CSMLS or MLPAO is required.
  • Certified to perform phlebotomy as a delegated controlled act.
  • Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.

 

Experience:

  • Recent phlebotomy experience preferred.
  • Recent experience in performing resting ECGs, Rhythm strips, 15 lead.
  • High level of expertise required in performing the following:
    • Adult venipunctures
    •  Pediatric venipunctures
    •  Newborn Heel Picks
    • Finger Picks
    • Use of Butterflys
    • Procuring blood samples from hands/feet
    • Procuring Blood Cultures 

 

Knowledge/ Skills/Ability:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and principles of Electrocardiograms.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in the procurement of various types of blood samples.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the proven ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians and other health care professionals.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of Microsoft Office software, i.e. Excel, Word and Outlook.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in data entry and working knowledge of computerized  patient information systems (Meditech)
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Proven ability to work independently and as a team player.

 

Personal Suitability:

  • Demonstrated positive work record and good attendance record.
  • Current WHMIS certification & Mask Fit.
